Mariah, who wore a green ballgown and sunglasses for the evening outing, smiled at photographers while walking in and out of the store. The photos were taken exactly one week before Mariah stormed off stage in the middle of a nightmare performance of songs including 'Emotions' and 'We Belong Together.'

It was a time when spiritualism was hugely popular and there was a mystique surrounding photography's process. And British photographer William Hope made the most of a 1920s society that yearned to learn more about the paranormal to produce this striking set of 'spirit photographs' which had the world captivated at the time. Mr Hope - who was part of the infamous Crewe Circle, a spiritualist photography group in the English town - was supported by many of his contemporaries including Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. But his work was later discredited after investigators discovered that he had used a photographic process called double exposure, where a single image is created by exposing the film several times.

Roger Hill, 59, from Bennett, Colorado and his wife Caryn, own and operate Silver Lining Tours, one of the largest and oldest storm chasing tour companies in the world. Over the past 12 months, they have chased more than 32 tornadoes across the country capturing dramatic images and also gaining a place in the record books. The storm chasing duo pride themselves in getting their tour guests in a position to witness the most violent weather in the world, while keeping a safe distance and protecting themselves.

About 3,000 swimmers met at the Coney Island on New Year's day to jump into the frigid Atlantic for the annual polar bear plunge. Similar traditions took place in Florida, New Jersey and Canada.
