'It's boring': Taboo heartthrob Tom Hardy slams monotony of modern 'homogenised, eight-packed, tanned, straight-teeth action-heros'

He is known for playing gritty roles in action films such as Mad Max and The Dark Knight Rises.  

But Tom Hardy has revealed he believes 'baddies' have lost their individuality.

The 39-year-old heartthrob slammed beefy modern action hero roles, saying he finds them boring to play.

The Max Max: Fury Road star blasted the 'homogenised sort of eight-pack, tanned, straight-teeth, physicalised, action-hero leading male' in an interview with the Sunday Times.

The Dark Knight Rises actor drew a distinction between Harrison Ford's 1980s Indiana Jones and Australian actor Chris Hemsworth's more recent portrayal of Thor in several Marvel Universe films.

Hollwood sex symbol Hardy, who is currently on television screens in period drama Taboo, told the paper: 'One was allowed to express personal characteristics ... Now you've got to look like you've just come off a vegan diet, gone to the gym, part Navy Seal, really clean-valued, clean-living, moralistic - and then you go out and save the world from an impending danger that isn't really dangerous at all.

'And it becomes not committed to any sense of the gubbins of reality: I don't recognise this man.'

Meanwhile Hardy created Taboo with his writer father, Edward 'Chips' Hardy, and it is being screened seven years after they came up with the idea.  

Viewers got a treat on Saturday night, as the first episode of the mini-series emerged, with the hunk stripping off completely to reveal his toned and tattooed physique.

The handsome British actor caused quite the stir as he returned to his village after being presumed dead.

Taboo tells the tale of adventurer James Keziah Delaney - who builds his own shipping empire in the early 1800s.

The short series is based on a story written by Tom and his father, and follows the journey of Delaney- played by Tom, returning to London having lived in Africa for ten years.

Uncovering a mysterious legacy left by his murdered father, he is driven to start a war of revenge- stuck between a warring Britain and America.

And last night his sister was seen gasping, 'He's alive', as he made a dramatic return to the village.

'You look the same,' he was told, as he replied gruffly, 'I'm not'.

And it emerged he was still a target, as dark scenes saw him hunted down and tossed naked in a dark chamber as one man shouted, 'That man will hang for treason'.

Directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, the eight-part American and British miniseries stars House Of Cards actor Michael Kelly, Brazil star Jonathan Pryce and Game Of Thrones' Oona Chaplin.

Polly Hill, Controller of BBC Drama commissioning said in a statement: 'The talent on-and off-screen is incredible and I am so excited to see Steve's captivating scripts come to life.

'Tom Hardy and the rest of the cast are set to bring this original and spectacular story to life in a unique and epic way.'

The Hammersmith-born heartthrob- who has a 1-year-old child with wife Charlotte Riley and an older son with ex-girlfriend Rachael Speed, recently told Esquire that he promised to let Leonardo DiCaprio design a tattoo for him after he lost a bet.

However he has yet to complete his side of the bargain,  'I haven't got it yet, because it sucks, he laughed.

'He wrote, in this really sh***y handwriting: 'Leo knows everything.' Ha! I was like, 'OK, I'll get it done, but you have to write it properly,' he laughed.
