Time to shine! Drew Barrymore, Sofia Vergara, Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman bring sparkle and bold shoulders to Golden Globe Awards

They walked the red carpet sheltered by a plastic tent, under brooding grey skies which threatened heavy rain.

But the stars of Hollywood made no concession to the stormy weather, as they strutted their stuff in a dazzling array of couture gowns at the 74th Golden Globes on Sunday.

Bringing a flash of silver were Drew Barrymore, Sofia Vergara, pregnant Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker, in what was unmistakably the shade of the night.

Time to shine! (L-R) Drew Barrymore, Sofia Vergara, Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman all brought the glamour to the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hills Hilton in California on Sunday night

The four all rocked another strong trend - bold shoulders - in their striking gowns.

It was clear Sarah Jessica - nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her show Divorce - was having fun with her fashion. The actress spun around to show off her Vera Wang dress, which flew up around her in a cloud of fabric.

Meanwhile, Nicole told DailyMail.com that daughters Faith and Sunday Rose picked out her Alexander McQueen dress.

'I was trying all the frocks on and when I put this on they both jumped up and said "Mummy, you look like a beautiful fairy on that dress!" So that was it. I stopped trying on any of the others and said to them that I'm wearing the fairy dress to the Globes.'

Looking good: Drew showed off her slimmed down figure in her 1920s style dress (she presented an award)

'A beautiful fairy!' Nicole told DailyMail.com that daughters Faith and Sunday Rose picked out her Alexander McQueen dress; she was nominated for Best supporting actress for her film Lion

Time to shine: Love it or hate it, there was no denying that Sarah Jessica's dress made an impact

Now that's a dress! Sarah Jessica Parker had a Carrie Bradshaw moment as she twirled in her white Vera Wang gown on the red carpet for the Golden Globes on Sunday

She admitted: 'It's not really what I would normally wear but it made the girls happy.'

The ceremony at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles honours the best in film and American television of 2016 as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

The nominees are split by genre within the TV and film categories and the event is seen as a predictor of how the Academy Awards might go in February.

And it's also a first look at the awards season's big fashion trends, which are sure to filter down to high streets everywhere in the coming months.

Oh baby! Natalie Portman covered her bump in mustard yellow with just a tasteful section of embellishment on the skirt

Her leading man: Natalie's French husband, ballet choreographer Benjamin Millepied, accompanied her

Twinkle twinkle! LaLa Land's Emma Stone wore a star-embellished gown, to collect her Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy gong - one of seven won by the record-breaking movie

They're all white: Felicity Huffman (nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for American Crime), Kristin Cavallari (presented pre-show coverage), Gwendoline Christie (Games Of Thrones) and Sienna Miller (presented an award)

Dots to strips:  Singer Janelle Monae, Games Of Thrones star Sophie Turner, model Heidi Klum and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Solid gold: Thandie Newton (nominated for Best supporting actress  for TV show Westworld) was dipped in sequins, while Naomie Harris (nominated for Best supporting actress for her film Moonlight) shimmered all over

Power couple: Justin Timberlake (nominated for Best Original Song  for Trolls' Can’t Stop The Feeling) looked on proudly as his wife Jessica Biel posed for the cameras

That's amore! Justin and Jessica were the picture of an adoring couple

Make a statement in a full skirt frock like Jessica

The Golden Globes isn't a time for a dress that is going to blend you into the background, so Jessica Biel really brought it in this daring Elie Saab number.

The A-list actress owned it in the couture creation which featured a simple, modern plunging front that balanced out the voluminous proportions of the dramatic full skirt.

Adorned with statement floral accents, the dress is daring yet beautiful. We love this Xscape dress in particular, the crystal-sparked bodice is sexy yet sophisticated.

Silver and foxy! Nicole sparkled in a shimmering metallic gown as she posed with her smart husband Keith Urban, while Kelly Preston wore a similar shade as she joined her husband John Travolta

Stars as diverse as LaLa Land's triumphant Globe best acress in a musical or comedy winner Emma Stone, Kristin Cavallari, Gwendoline Christie and Sienna Miller all rocked white, while grey and black were also popular choices.

Combining the two were models Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum, in black and white stripes, while singer Janelle Monae and Games Of Thrones star Sophie Turner also wore a version of the striking look.

But there were also plenty of brighter shades on display, with a veritable rainbow of colours, from pregnant Natalie Portman in of the moment mustard yellow, to Lily Collins in dusty pink.

Full length and fabulous: Chrissy Teigen, Kelly Preston, Naomi Campbell and Elsa Pataky

Floaty, floral and fringed: Gillian Anderson, Kristen Wiig and Jane The Virgin's Gina Rodriguez in Naeem Khan

Natalie was accompanied by her French husband, ballet choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who made a rare public appearance at her side.

Her bright yellow frock was cut from heavy thick fabric which skimmed her bump, and the long-sleeved tasteful Jackie Kennedy-inspired design had just a small section of embellishment on the skirt and arms.

Emily Ratajkowski, Maisie Williams, Reese Witherspoon in custom Atelier Versace and Viola Davis all picked the same sunshine shade.

Another popular colour was pink, in all it's many shades.

What a doll: Fashion plate Lily Collins had a princess moment in pink Zuhair Murad Couture; she was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role in Rules Don’t Apply

Pretty in pink: Angela Bassett, Felicity Jones in Gucci and Carrie Underwood

Hand on hip time! Zoe Saldana, Annette Bening, Connie Britton and Globe winner Claire Foy in Erdem

Posing in pink: Karrueche Tran (presented red carpet coverage) stood out in her ruched fuschia strapless gown

Wide shot:Donald Glover and Sofia Vergara face the cameras on the red carpet

Actresses Angela Bassett and Felicity Jones, country singer Carrie Underwood, Claire Foy in Erdem and TV presenter Karrueche Tran all rocked the shade.

Lily Collins's dusty pink ballgown was created especially for her by Zahair Murad couture, and worn with gems by Harry Winston.

The 27-year-old was in the running for a Golden Globe for her role in the film Rules Don't Apply.

'It's a special night for me I feel like a Hollywood princess,' she told DailyMail.com. And she looked like one, in her fairytale gown, as she arrived with her mother, Jill Tavelman.

Not so mellow yellow! Emily Ratajkowski brings the sunshine in a vibrant gold dress

Now that's a pose: The model, who starred in Robin Thicke's Blurred Line video, made sure to show off her satin gown

Here comes sunshine: Maisie Williams, Reese Witherspoon in custom Atelier Versace and Viola Davis

The red conveyer belt: With such a huge amount of stars in attendance, they had to wait their turn to pose; Reese and Andrew Garfield each take a turn in front of the camera pit

Striking: Kerry Washington wore a yellow lace dress with delicate black heels

Also going for the ballgown effect was Hailee Steinfeld, 20, who looked lovely in a lilac chiffon Vera Wang gown and Giuliana Rancic, with a grown up take on the princess look in a sequinned floral ballgown by Rani Zakhem.

While they were living the fairytale, there was no shortage of racy looks - including Jessica Biel.

All eyes were fixed on the mother-of-one as she sashayed the red carpet in an Elie Saab gown with a dramatically plunging neckline, as husband Justin Timberlake looked on proudly.

Jessica certainly wasn't alone in taking the plunge, with Mandy Moore and Kristen Bell going daringly low in their black frocks.

Grey day: Anna Kendrick reflected the brooding skies above in her chiffon Vionnet gown, while Keri Russell wore animal print

Sly's leading ladies! Miss Golden Globes Sistine, Scarlet and Sophia Stallone keep it classic in black as they lead red carpet arrivals for the Golden Globe Awards

Sister act: The trio blow kisses to the cameras as they pose together

His girls: Proud Sly posed with his daughters and wife Jennifer Flavin

Hollywood's next generation: Stranger Things stars Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, and (bottom) Millie Bobby Brown enjoy their big night out

Taking the plunge: Mandy Moore (l) wore a black caped dress with a daringly low neckline, while Kristen Bell (r) dared to bare in a sparkling sequinned gown; but Evan Rachel Wood (c) went for a different look altogether

Not so boring black: Amy Adams, Kathryn Hahn and Teresa Palmer each put their own spin on the LBD

Dressed to impress: Winona Ryder, of Stranger Things, wore a strapless black satin gown while Blake Lively, in attendance to support actor husband Ryan Reynolds, went for black velvet

And Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner wore a shimmering Louis Vuitton dress that proved rather revealing when the lights on the Golden Globes red carpet caught the sparkly fabric.

Sharing the honours as Miss Golden Globes at this year's ceremony were sisters Sophia, 19, Sistine, 17, and 13-year-old Scarlet - the daughters of actor Sylvester - who led arrivals for the 74th Golden Globe Awards.

The youthful trio kept their look classic in co-ordinating but distinct black gowns, accessorised with some rather grown-up diamonds.

Making a return to the red carpet was Mel Gibson, who is experiencing something of a career resurgence thanks to his new movie Hacksaw Ridge. The 61-year-old is nominated for best director in a motion picture for his first directorial effort in 10 years.

He's back! Mel Gibson escorts his pregnant girlfriend Rosalind Ross to the Globes; she is pregnant with his ninth child

Looking Wonder ful! Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot shows off her bump in black and silver

Baby time: Artist Amatus Sami-Karim and actor Mahershala Ali, left, joined Saffron Burrows on the red carpet

Still, it was Mel's pregnant girlfriend Rosalind Ross who drew the eye as she walked at his side. The pretty former equestrian professional, 26, is pregnant with his ninth child.

Also expecting was Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot, who flattered her bump with a striking black and white gown, which she held to better show off her bump.

And actress Saffron Burrows also showed off her pregnant figure on the red carpet, in a black dress worn under a jacket.

Girl's night out! Sarah Paulson and Amanda Peet arrived for the Globes together

Friends forever! Michelle Williams made it a girl's night as she arrived with her BFF Busy Philipps

Catching up: Sienna Miller and Jessica Chastain posed together while Game Of Thrones Sophie Turner helped out her co-star and fellow Brit Maisie Williams

For many, the Globes was a date night. But having a girls' night was Michelle Williams and her BFF Busy Philipps, who posed together.

And Sarah Paulson and her bestie Amanda Peet even shared a friendly kiss as they arrived for the Globes together.

Meanwhile Colin Farrell and Lily Collins each made the evening a family affair, bringing along their mothers.

Living the fairytale: Hailee Steinfeld, 20, looked lovely in a lilac chiffon Vera Wang gown fit for a princess

Flower power: Giuliana Rancic went for a grown up princess look in a sequinned floral ballgown by Rani Zakhem

Felling blue: Jessica Chastain in Prada, Isabelle Huppert, Caitriona Balfe

Silver goddess: Ruth Negga's dress featured a zipper down the front left open from the knee down and a shorter but wider zipper down the back from the shoulder blades to the top of her derriere

Tonight Show star Jimmy Fallon hosts this year's show for the first time, promising lots of laughs and numerous cameos from his celebrity pals.

Hollywood A-listers Drew, Sylvester Stallone, Nicole and Reese Witherspoon will add glitz to the annual party as awards presenters.

The list of nominees were revealed by Don Cheadle, Laura Dern and Anna Kendrick on December 12.
