Some Thoughts on Yule

StonehengeSunset3,344 words

Yule is the midwinter festival celebrated by my ancestors and by Germanic neo-pagans today. Midwinter is a time when much of nature seems to die or to depart. The trees are stripped of their leaves. The birds abandon us, flying off to warmer climes. Bears, badgers, chipmunks, and squirrels hibernate. Water freezes over. The earth is covered in ice and snow, so that nothing can grow. The air is so chilled that when we are out in it for too long, death becomes something tangible, and we rush inside.  Read more …

Un preludio a Ser y Tiempo
¿Qué es la metafísica?

English original here

Read more …

Heidegger sobre Nietzsche, Metafísica y Nihilismo

bythesea3,431 words

English original here

Heidegger on Nietzsche, Metaphysics, & Nihilism

bythesea3,292 words

Spanish translation here

Heidegger’s central philosophical topic has a number of names: the sense (Sinn) or meaning of Being, the truth (Wahrheit) of Being, the clearing (Lichtung) of Being, the “It” that “gives” Being, and the “Ereignis” (“event” or “appropriation”) of Being, referring to the mutual belonging of man and Being.[1] Read more …

A Prelude to Being & Time
What is Metaphysics?

3,589 words

rembrandt_philosopher_reading

Rembrandt, Philosopher Reading, 1631

Spanish translation here

The best way of understanding what metaphysics is, is to understand what it is not. Metaphysics is not a specialized discipline; it is not a theoretical or practical inquiry that deals with a specific set of facts, or tries to change the world in a specific way. Every kind of fact and every kind of activity has some specialized discipline correlated to it. No matter what kind of facts you name, no matter how trivial, chances are that someone has written a doctoral dissertation on it — or will write one someday.

A Prelude to Being & Time
What is Phenomenology?

Edmund Husserl, 1859–1938

Author’s Note:

Long, long ago, when I was still in graduate school, I had the daft idea of teaching Heidegger in an adult education class. It actually went quite well. I would usually prepare a detailed outline, follow it for a page, then start speaking extemporaneously. This is a student transcript of my background lecture on Being and Time. It has been only lightly edited. I added a citation and eliminated a few repetitions. If a tape comes to light, I will put it online.  Read more …

Heidegger’s Question Beyond Being

6,362 words

heidegger (1)Author’s Note:

The following text was written 21 years ago when I was in graduate school. I think it is a useful synthesis of the material available at the time, but I make no claims to originality. I tried to remove the kind of preciousness and pedantry that one finds in graduate student papers, but given the subject matter, what remains is necessarily somewhat densely written.

Everybody knows that Martin Heidegger was deeply interested in “Being,” indeed obsessed with it. Read more …
