Cinderella, Jasmine, Rapunzel... and Leia? Passionate Star Wars fans launch  a petition to make Carrie Fisher's character an official Disney princess

  • A Star Wars fan from Utah started a petition on Change.org asking Disney CEO Bob Iger to induct Princess Leia as an official Disney princess
  • Though Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, Princess Leia is not considered a Disney princess because she is not animated
  • Over 90,000 people have signed the petition and some fans have created Disney-fied illustrations of Carrie as Leia

When Disney acquired Lusasfilm in 2012, Stars Wars characters officially joined the same family as Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, and Mulan.

But while she is Disney-owned, Princess Leia is still not considered an official Disney princess. Merchandise from the entertainment company featuring the Disney princesses doesn't include the member of Alderaan royalty, in part because Carrie Fisher isn't an animated character.

But over 90,000 fans so far are looking to change that. They've all come together to sign a petition on Change.org urging Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger to add her to the ranks of Ariel, Tiana, and Aurora.

About time? Star Wars fans are petitioning to have Princess Leia inducted as an official Disney princess

Leia, played by Carrie Fisher, was adopted at birth and made a princess of her planet, Alderaan

'After the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess,' wrote Cody Christensen, a Utah man who started the petition.

'This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney's new properties that is beloved by millions.

'What we are asking is that the Walt Disney Corporation hold a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess as well as a special service in memory of Carrie Fisher,' he concluded.

Cartoon: Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney in 2012 but Leia is still not considered a Disney princess because she is not animated

Speaking up: Over 90,000 fans are hoping to change that by signing the petition

Since the petition was first launched, it has earned over 91,400 signatures from Star Wars fans.

It has also inspired quite a bit of artwork, casting Leia as a cartoon with the animated Disney princesses, as well as tributes from fans.

Star Wars lovers from all over the world have signed, leaving messages from the US, the UK, France, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Australia, Macedonia, Russia, and Lebanon.

Fans have imagined her as a cartoon and want her to join the ranks of Cinderella, Belle, Pocahontas, and Snow White

'Leia is an icon! Adopted into princesshood, she sacrifices everything for the greater good,' wrote one. 'Leia continues her fight and becomes General Organa who loses everything, but continues to fight for what is right.'

'I think Princess Leia is such a great role model,' wrote another. 'Everyone is like: "Oh, Elsa is so great, she doesn't need a man to save her etc. etc." But Leia, goes beyond that, I really think little girls should look up to her.'

Another added: 'Carrie Fisher deserves recognition and remembrance. What better way to do that than make Leia an official Disney princess. She will live on in our hearts forever.'
