In a signed statement given to police in September, his son alleged his father sexually abused him as a child for more than 10 years.

The accused made no admission of guilt when questioned by police before his death and was released without charge.

But police were preparing a brief of evidence when he died last week.

It is understood police obtained evidence of a recording and a letter in which the accused apologised for the abuse.

He had been involved in an organisational role with a football club for 14 years before his death.
