Fire breaks out at the Watergate hotel as fake claims about Trump and Moscow hookers fall apart
- Calls reporting the blaze went out to firefighters about 1:30pm on Wednesday
- Social media users shared pictures and videos of the blaze during the afternoon
- The fire was extinguished after about 40 minutes and no injuries were reported
- The hotel was the site of a break in in 1972 that led to Richard Nixon's resignation
Not for the first time, the Watergate complex in Washington DC was the scene of drama on Wednesday.
Firefighters were called to the infamous building in the nation's capital about 1:30pm after it was reported a blaze broke out on the 13th floor.
Social media users shared photographs of flames visibly coming from an empty apartment.

'All of a sudden we look out the window and see a condo has caught fire in Watergate 700. DC FD is on the scene now,' Jocelyn Miller tweeted, while also sharing two pictures of the fire.
'Fire at the Watergate residential building,' Patrick Garrigan wrote when he posted a video of the blaze.
DC Fire and Emergency Services provided an update on the fire at 1:42pm, tweeting: 'Working fire 700 block N. Hampshire Ave NW in the Watergate Complex. Fire 13th floor.'
About 10 minutes later the account published a video showing firefighters racing into the complex to put out the blaze.

Then, at 2:10pm, DC Fire and EMS said it had been put out.
'Watergate fire extinguished. We are hard at work removing smoke from several floors. Searches are negative. Building evacuated,' a statement read.
No injuries were reported after the fire.
The building shot to political infamy after a break in at the Democratic National Committee office housed inside in 1972.
The men who broke in were later connected to President Richard Nixon, and it was revealed they were attempting to steal documents and to wiretap phones.
In August 1974, after his role in the scandal came to light, Nixon resigned.
