Welcome to the era of the age-defying mid‑lifers. We’re now witnessing the inescapable rise of the Sister Mothers, so-called because they look more like siblings than mother and daughter. How is it that a generation of thirtysomethings are now being out-shone by attractive mums who, a generation ago, would have retreated to the slippered comfort of home and embraced a grey perm and elasticated slacks once they hit the menopause? The Big Chill begins: Heathrow cancels 80 flights as eight inches of snow starts to fall at start of three-day freeze with travel chaos and 93mph hurricane-strength winds
The Big Chill has hit Britain today, forcing flights to be cancelled and bringing chaos on the roads as snow and hurricane-force winds of up to 93mph sweep the country. The cold snap is set to last for three days and has already caused travel disruption and crashes in Scotland (right, Stirling) and northern parts of England this morning. Heathrow Airport has been forced to cancel 80 flights as the adverse weather reached the South East. The Met Office has said up to eight inches of snow could fall, with much of the country under a severe weather warning. High winds have caused widespread problems to roads and rail networks and thousands of properties have been left without power. And forecasters are warning of more dangerous conditions to follow, as the heavy snow is set to spread wider over tomorrow and Saturday. There were road closures and accidents (left, a car off the road after crash in Ayrshire) all over the country as motorists struggled to cope with the weather.

'Will you look after my cat?' Ex-MI6 spy 'who worked with murdered Alexander Litvinenko' flees his £1.5m home 'fearing for his life' leaving his pet with neighbours after being outed as the man behind the dirty dossier on Donald Trump
Ex-MI6 agent Christopher Steele has been named as the author of the salacious ‘dirty’ Russian dossier containing outlandish claims about Donald Trump’s sex life and bizarre footage held by the Kremlin’s blackmail unit. Steele, 52, was seen fleeing his gated Surrey home (top right) in his car yesterday and appears to have been in such a rush most of the lights were left on. A security source said: 'He is terrified for his safety', adding he may now be abroad or in a safe house. Mr Steele served MI6 for nearly two decades in Moscow and security sources say he once worked with murdered Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko. After leaving the secret service he set up a security business based in a grand Belgravia office block with Christopher Burrows (bottom right today), also a former MI6 agent. He refused to discuss the report, if his colleague had written it or where he was hiding. Mr Steele was reportedly hired by enemies of Donald Trump and was asked to do a 'general' trawl on the billionaire's links to Russia. A former colleague said he is ‘more showy and less grounded in reality than you might expect a former SIS (MI6) person to be'.
Model suffered horrifying facial injuries after she was attacked by stranger's dog that turned on her without warning
Shannon Clark (pictured) suffered gaping wounds (inset and left) to her mouth and chin after the dog turned on her without warning. She documented the slow recovery of the wounds she suffered six months ago and it is likely to be left with permanent scarring. The dog lover from Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute, decided to make the pictures public to warn others. She was left with blood gushing down her face and jagged cuts piercing right through her mouth and chin after the attack near her home in June last year. Shannon, who now has her own beloved dog, Tilly, feared at the time her injuries would never heal and that her career in modelling would be over.
Ca-tree-no Royale: Bond actor Daniel Craig's neighbours complain that giant 80-foot plane tree in the garden of his £4million London house is damaging their home
Camden Council is reviewing a request to cut down the 80 foot tree (right), heavily trim another and remove wisteria, honeysuckle and a group of hornbeams which are blamed for causing cracks to a house (inset) in a side-street in the north London area. Locals are unhappy, however, at the prospect of losing a tree which has stood for generations and become a local landmark in their back gardens. The application was submitted by the couple's neighbour. Ms Weisz, the star of The Mummy and The Constant Gardener, married Bond star Craig (together, left) in 2011. An engineer's report said the trees have caused subsidence in the neighbouring property, built in 1850.

Is this a picture of BIGFOOT in Northern Ireland? Mother out walking her dogs snaps 'sasquatch' in woods
Mother-of-one Maxine Caulfield (right) was walking her dogs in the 'haunted' woods of Slieveanorra in Northern Ireland when she said her pets used their 'sixth sense' to spot the mystery 'beast'. She took photos of the area but it wasn't until she returned home that she saw a strange 'furry' figure (left) that she believes may be Bigfoot. Ghost stories have been told about the woods since a US Air Force B17 Flying Fortress bomber crashed into a mountain there, killing eight of the ten people on board.
British boy, eight, breaks viewers' hearts on Spanish edition of Masterchef after breaking into tears because 'I've let my granddad down' when his fish and chips flop
Oscar Jefferson (left), 8, who only moved to the Costa del Sol with his family two years ago, was comforted by one of the show's judges after he began crying on the Spanish version of the cookery show. The junior chef was attempting to cook his grandfather Michael Jefferson's take on fish and chips but sadly failed to finish the dish in time (top right). Viewers of the show could not help but fall in love with the boy after he described in Spanish how he’d ‘let his granddad down’.

THE WORLD AT A GLANCE
Gunman screaming 'Allahu Akbar' opens fire in Spanish supermarket while wearing 'suicide vest' filled with gasoline and gunpowder
The attacker, who was reportedly carrying gasoline and gunpowder, walked into the Mercadona shop in the As Lagoas region of Ourense, north-western Spain, before opening firing shots into the air. Several shoppers were inside the supermarket when the man entered and fired shots into the air, causing emergency services to swoop on the building (pictured top right). According to police sources, the young man has psychological problems and lives next-door to the shop. The incident, which happened at around 2pm, did not result in any injuries but left many extremely shaken. Other images show a shotgun on a checkout belt (bottom right) and bottles smashed all over the floor (left).
