'I don't like to talk about it!' Lisa Edelstein reflects on her disappointment when she lost Carrie Bradshaw role to Sarah Jessica Parker

Playing the Sex And The City role made Sarah Jessica Parker a cultural icon but the famed shoe-loving journalist was almost played by someone else.

Lisa Edelstein has revealed her disappointment after first landing the part of Carrie Bradshaw and then losing it to her fellow actress.

While she now has her own show which has been compared to the West Coast equivalent of Sex And The City, the 50-year-old Girlfriend's Guide To Divorce star losing the part is still a sore subject.

Appearing on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday night, she told Andy Cohen and fellow guest Kim Richards about the hard time in her career.

Confirming to a caller that yes she almost was the iconic Carrie, the House actress said it is 'not something I like to talk about'.

Lisa said: 'The only reason that story is out is because [SATC creator] Darren Starr brought it up in an interview. But when I talk about it sounds like I keep bringing it up.'

Lisa was all set to play the Manolo Blahnik-wearing relationship expert when Sarah Jessica had a change of heart.

'It was one of those moments in my life when my life was about to change and then Sarah Jessica decided that she was OK doing TV.'

Lisa was so far along in the process that she was given a payout when it was decided SJP would star as Carrie instead.

The little bit of money did not soften the blow, she said: 'It was a very sad time but it was a very big disappointment.

Highs and lows: While the 50-year-old star says it was 'very sad time' she now looks back and thinks it was for the best as she matured as an actress at the right pace 

'At the same time life has certainly worked out just fine and when I look back, I think that I had a lot of growing to do and a lot of maturing in my work and my career ended up at just the right pace.'

Lisa now stars in what many feel is the West Coast alternative but instead of following women's lives as they fall in love and try to find a husband, her show is about falling out of love, getting rid of your husband and then starting to date all over again.
