How DO celebrities manage to step off the plane looking so fresh-faced? Jennifer Lopez's make-up artist reveals her travel beauty hacks

  • Celebrity make-up artist Kate Best shares her tips with MailOnline Travel
  • In-flight essentials include eye drops, lip balm and gentle cleansing wipes
  • She suggests a skin-quenching face mask on-board - beloved by Chrissy Teigen

We've seen it a hundred times - A-listers drifting off planes flaunting glowing complexions and looking impossibly refreshed.

Obviously, flying first class, having an army of professionals on hand, and simply being genetically blessed accounts for a good deal of this.

But according to celebrity make-up artist Kate Best, whose clients include Jennifer Lopez and Vanessa Williams, there are a number of easy in-flight hacks anyone can adopt.

How does she do it? Celebrity make-up artist Kate Best, whose clients include Jennifer Lopez, pictured here at LAX airport, reveals her travelling tricks of the trade

Speaking to MailOnline Travel, Kate walks us through her well-honed flying rituals.

'First of all, the best way to avoid getting off the plane with your hair looking like a bird's nest is to tie it up in a ballet-bun on top of your head when you board,' she advises.

'It won't pick up any grease from your face and keeps it under control so you can just shake it out upon landing.'

Eyeliner and mascara, she points out, will never survive a long-haul flight.

'I remove my make-up after take-off with a mild cleansing wipe, and then use a SKII Facial Hydrating Mask. Expensive, and you'll look like Hannibal Lector, but worth it.'

She adds that there are cheaper alternatives which will do the trick as well, the key is to get as much moisture into your skin as possible.

Asked whether the so-called golden rule of 'drink plenty of water' really makes a difference, Kate says it does.

'Absolutely. And drinking alcohol - sadly - accelerates the skin dehydration process ten fold. I stick to hot water with lemon.'

Once you've taken off your scary-looking mask, it's onto the next pampering step.

'Spray your face with a refreshing toner, then apply some nourishing anti-aging cream, as well as some eye cream and a dab of lip balm.

'Then, if you're nap-inclined, snuggle up under a blanket and get some rest - I highly recommend a silk eye mask and even a pillow case if possible. It's the gentlest on your skin.'

This is a tip Kim Kardashian has revealed in the past, too, saying she always travels with a black silk pillowcase for the same reason.

In preparation for landing, it's a quick five-minute bathroom routine.

Kate, pictured, also recommends tying your hair into a ballet bun as soon as you get on the plane to avoid it picking up oil, then shaking it out before disembarking

'As soon as the captain makes the announcement, nip to the loo,' she suggests.

'Brush your teeth and use eye drops to take down any redness. Take your hair down and if it's thick or brittle, massage some lip balm into the ends with your finger tips.

'Then cleanse your face with another wipe, take a tissue and dab off any oil before applying a primer and then some dewy foundation.

'Dab some concealer under the eyes, and sweep a black eyeliner from the outer to the inner edge of the eyes. Then, a lick of mascara and some lip balm and you're ready to disembark.'

One thing you will notice about nearly every celebrity snapped at the airport is their number one choice of armour - sunglasses.

'Eye drops and concealer will certainly help, but sometimes sunglasses are your best bet,' Kate concedes. 'That, paired with nourished, hydrated skin - and you'll look fresh as a daisy.'
