Just fake it! Odd Mom Out star Sean Kleier shares his top tips for looking good in a suit - even if you have no idea how to pull off the dapper look

  • Sean is a (self-proclaimed) fashion amateur
  • The actor/comedian has been faking his way to looking good in a suit and gives humorous advice on how you can, too

They say 'It's the clothes that make the man', but how many men really know what they're doing when it comes to getting dressed?

Actor Sean Kleier plays Lex Von Weber on Bravo's hit series Odd Mom Out. And while Lex is an impeccably dressed New York financier, Sean is a regular guy from Louisville, Kentucky with marginal knowledge about fashion.

'Fortunately, for the clueless types like myself, we can still look great by doing what men do best – faking expertise,' says Sean. Here, the comedian shares his top tips for looking good in a suit, when you actually have no idea how to pull one off.

Self-proclaimed fashion novice: Sean Kleier plays Lex Von Weber on Bravo's hit series Odd Mom Out. While his character Lex Von Weber is dressed to the nines, Sean fakes his fashion expertise

Step 1: Size matters. Make sure your suit fits.

When it comes to suits, 'All I have to do is not F it up. As in, make sure it fits,' says Sean. 'A slim cut, contemporary two-button suit, requires no embellishment. Plain old blue, black or grey look great.'

While you can save money on accessories, your suit is the one thing you don't want to skimp on. 'I spend a little so my pants don't split (again!) when trying to pick up that important person’s business card,' says Sean.

'I also go to a good tailor so the length of my jacket doesn’t get cut above my belt line.'

'I once tricked myself into thinking linen, cotton or an otherwise alternative material would give me a leg up. It didn’t. I was left wondering why purposeful wrinkles look great in magazines but made me look like a scrotum. If I stick to the basics: wool in blue, black or grey - people confuse me for someone with his s**t together.'

Fit is key:  'A slim cut, contemporary two-button suit, requires no embellishment. Plain old blue, black or grey look great'

Step 2: Keep it simple, stupid.

'You know what never looks bad? A fitted, pressed, solid colored button down,' says the actor.

'Somehow, these can be hard to find, as most fit like pillow sacks.'

According to the Odd Mom Out star, classic white is the way to go. 'Though I inevitably have to buy multiple as whatever I’m eating ends up on my shirt. Blues and purples and pinks can look great, too.'

Don't overthink it. 'Let me put it to you this way,' says Sean. 'Do you ever see James Bond wearing paisley, stripes or plaid? Does he mess with a spread collar? No, he doesn’t have time for that s**t. He’s too busy not being clueless.'

FEMAIL SUGGESTS:

Stick to white: Slim-Fit Button-Down Collar Cotton Oxford Shirt by Dunhill, $195; mrporter.com

Step 3: Don't get fancy with your footwear.

'When I wear square toed shoes, I notice that I want to punch myself in the face, and it's because I look like an idiot,' jokes Sean.

'And pointy shoes are no less left-swipe-worthy. Certain classic shoe styles have been around forever, and for a good reason. When the right designers make classic shoes with their own slight, modern flare, it’s almost always a winner.'

FEMAIL SUGGESTS:

Round toe lace-up: Public Eye Oxford by Kenneth Cole, $225; kennethcole.com

Dress shoe: Un.Bizley Plain by Clarks, $160; zappos.com

The basics: 'You know what never looks bad? A fitted, pressed, solid colored button down,' says Sean. Opt for a classic pair of shoes and complete the look with a white pocket square

Step 4: Add a stylish (no frills) accessory.

Sean's secret weapon will surprise you.

'Fellas… a clean white pocket square – you don’t have to think about it. You don’t have to figure out what it goes with. You don’t have to keep messing with it to keep it from looking like garbage.

You just put it in, and voila; you are mistaken for someone who knows what they are doing.'
