Stepping out of the shade! Queen Letizia stuns in a bold patterned outfit as she attends an official engagement in sunny Madrid

Queen Letizia of Spain opted for a chic patterned outfit as she warded off the winter chill in Madrid today.

The 44-year-old royal stepped out in a beige collarless coat, a bright red jumper, a bold patterned skirt and a black leather tote for a meeting in the Spanish capital.

Letizia, who returned to her royal duties last week following the festive break, wore her hair in a loose side parting, adding a pair of gold hoop earrings to complete her look.

The mother-of-two was attending a meeting with the Spanish Federation for Rare Diseases (FEDER), for which she is honorary president.

According to FEDER, the organisation aims to promote 'the need to work with everyone involved to promote the access to a diagnosis for those people suffering from rare diseases.'

The royal added a pair of gold hoop earrings to complete her look

Improving the quality of life of the patients and their families, as well as encouraging the investigation of rare pathologies, is the main objective of the group, with which the queen has been actively collaborating for a few years now.

Letizia, 44, is mother to Princess Leonor, 11 and Princess Sofía, nine, and is married to King Felipe VI.

Letizia married into the Spanish monarchy in 2004, following a successful career as a journalist and newsreader.

She was previously married to Alonso Guerrero Pérez, a writer, but the pair divorced after just a year in 1999.
