Sophia Bush's marriage to her One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray lasted a mere five months in 2005.

The 34-year-old actress discusses the much-publicized demise and aftermath of the relationship in an open letter published by Cosmopolitan this month.

While she didn't mention the actor by name, Sophia said: 'In my 20s, when I was starting out my career as an actor, I wasn't looking for a relationship, but one found me and became serious, even though I hadn't planned to settle down until my 30s,

Sophia Bush hit up one of the many Golden Globes afterparties when she was spied at InStyle's bash at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

The former One Tree Hill star showed off her slim figure in a Monique Lhullier gown and the floor length stunner featured a lace bodice with criss crossing straps that covered Sophia's modesty and a column skirt.

'But when the person you're with asks you to marry him, you think: "This must be happening because it's supposed to."

The Chicago Fire star added: 'I refuse to let that one relationship define me, which is why I've done my best to avoid discussing it for 10 years,

'The reality is that, yes, it was a massive event in my life. And the trauma of it was amplified by how public it became, which was incredibly foreign and bizarre to a girl who'd been just another college kid 24 months before her life blew up.'

Sophia also writes about how people should stop searching for 'The One' and that every relationship, no matter how short lived, can serve a purpose.

'Some are meant to heal you, some are meant to teach you how to build yourself up and some are meant to show you how to trust your own intuition,' she explained.

'Not every love can last forever. When you take the pressure of The One off, you'll open yourself up to endless possibilities,

'You'll learn to have a truly deep, knowing relationship with yourself first. Then the rest will fall into place. Reasons, seasons, and lifetimes. They’re all valid.' she concluded.

Sophia and Chad married in Santa Monica in April 2005 but announced their separation just five months later and their divorce was finalised in December 2006.

The actress tried to have the union annulled citing fraud but the request was denied.

In 2014 she said of the relationship: 'We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place. To all the other co-stars who've worked it out, more power to you'

Chad, 35, is currently expecting his second child with wife Sarah Roemer, 32 who he married in 2015.

In her letter published by Cosmo Sophia also writes that people should stop searching for 'The One' and that every relationship no matter how short lived can serve a purpose
