Menacing: Tom strips off on numerous occasions in the dark eight-part series

Tom has stripped off for several scenes in the series, and has also been seen in promotional shots in nothing but a loin cloth wading through a swamp.

Speaking of the adult side to the dark drama with BBC Newsbeat, Tom said he wished there had been more opportunities to get his naked body in the final cut.

'You're lucky there was a loin cloth because I didn't want one,' said Tom of the much-hyped snippet of him wading through the swamp.

On the promo trail: The star removed his jumper once inside to reveal his arm tattoos

He continued: 'It's not a period drama until someone gets naked and covers themselves in blood. At least you're showing willing.

'I was in Tilbury, in the moat, in the docks, with nothing on. We were trying to eke out drama from any opportunity and none of that makes the cut.'

Hardy plays a rogue 19th Century adventurer in Taboo, which is the brainchild of Hardy and his novelist father Chips.

Glint in his eye: Tom was in fine form as he addressed the press

The script was written by Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight.

Tom explained that he and his father Chips Hardy, who also created the show, approached Stephen about working on Taboo.

But Stephen ended up asking Tom if he would consider appearing in Locke and Peake Blinders, should he work on the show.

Good value: He gesticulated passionately inside the venue as he spoke about the eight-part series directed by Ridley Scott

He told IGN: 'We begged Steve to write our story because we had a concept and a basic treatment of the character, and Steve was busy and he had an offer informally, which was, "If you do Locke and Peaky Blinders, I would love to do your pilot and rewrite your title."

'That's where it all started, and the three of us set about trying to create a new piece of work.'

Also starring Jonathan Pryce and Oona Chaplin, it’s set in 1814, when Hardy’s adventurer hero Delaney returns from Africa to London to inherit what’s left of his dead father’s shipping empire.

He is then caught up in a tale of conspiracy, murder and betrayal reaching right across the globe.

Stripping off: Tom previously said he wished there had been more opportunities to get his naked body in the final cut

Championing the cause: Tom wore an array of bracelets including one showing his support for Help For Heroes
