The Carpenters 'sue record labels for $2M in lost digital royalties'

The Carpenters have reportedly filed a lawsuit against A&M Records and Universal Music Group for more than $2M over lost digital download royalties.

According to TMZ, the court agrees that Richard Carpenter has a case against the two record companies that have shut him out of iTunes and other music site profits.

The sibling pop duo - who signed with A&M in 1969 - put out 10 albums and had 35 Billboard Top 10 hits including Close To You, Rainy Days on Mondays, and We've Only Just Begun.

The music stopped in 1983 when the 70-year-old pianist's younger sister Karen died age 32 of heart failure caused by complications related to anorexia nervosa.

The singer and drummer looked alarmingly thin during her final public appearance at the 25th anniversary Grammy Awards photocall in 1983.

Following her tragic death, the three-time Grammy winner oversaw four posthumous records - including As Time Goes By in 2001 - as well as Karen's self-titled solo record.

And Richard battled his own demons in 1979 when he completed a six-week rehab stint at the Menninger Clinic in Kansas for an addiction to Quaaludes.

Karen left everything in her will to her big brother, who's battling on behalf of himself and his five children with wife Mary Rudolph.
