'That just came out and I really wish it hadn't': Cringing Reese Witherspoon accidentally admits she had to quit film for failing a Scottish accent in awkward interview moment

She is one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood with an Oscar to boot.

But it seems even Reese Witherspoon can have an off day. 

During a TV interview with Ross King, the 40-year-old actress accidentally revealed she had to quit a movie due to a failure to master a Scottish accent.

The star made her revelation during an interview with her latest co-star Matthew McConaughy which aired on Thursday's The Lorraine Show.

When quizzed about the hardest accents to master, Reese replied: 'Scottish is really... I don't want to talk about it. I tried to do a Scottish accent once. It was bad. I had to quit the movie.'

'You did? Over the accent?' asked Matthew.

'It's not my finest moment,' she responded, cringing. 'No. I don't want to talk about it anymore.' 

Addressing Matthew, she said: 'That just came out and I really wish it hadn't.'

The stars are busy promoting their new animated movie Sing in which Matthew voices Buster Moon - a koala who hosts a singing contest.

Reese plays a pig called Rosita in the film which also features the voices of Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johanssen, John C.Reilly, Jennifer Saunders and Nick Kroll.

'She’s had 25 kids, so she had to put her dreams on hold and now the singing competition gets her out of the house and remembering that she had a life beyond having kids,' Reese previously told The Today Show about the role.

'I think it’s a really touching story. I think a lot of moms will relate to it and I think a lot of kids will appreciate their mom more after seeing it.'

Both Matthew and Reese are parents to three children, with the actress admitting that between the pair of them, their offspring had seen the movie 'like 60 times.' 

'Every time they come out they have a different favourite character and every time they come out they have a different favourite song,' said Matthew. 'It happens for me too as a parent.'

'There's so many great messages in the movie about believing in yourself and learning to love family members and having hopes and dreams,' added Reese.
