Bella Hadid looked sad and downcast as she was spotted for the first time in public since learning her ex-boyfriend The Weeknd has embarked on a romance with Selena Gomez.

The model, 20, only split from the R&B star, 26, in November so it's got to hurt that he has moved on so quickly.

Bella looked strained as she held a hand to her furrowed brow after arriving back in New York on Friday.

Hours after The Weeknd - real name Abel Tesfaye - and Selena, 24, were snapped hugging and kissing following a dinner date Tuesday night, the younger sister of Gigi Hadid 'unfollowed' the Hands To Myself singer on Instagram.

Initially it seemed Bella was out to prove she didn't care about the Canadian artist's new love, sharing a revealing swimsuit selfie on social media as if to show him what he was missing.

But the heartache was clearly showing as she walked through the arrivals area at LaGuardia after a trip to the Bahamas.

The model wore her hair scraped up into a high bun and covered up behind a pair of sunglasses.

She was dressed in ripped skinny jeans and black ankle boots and her midriff was visible thanks to a cropped black top.

She added a large khaki green Alpha Industries bomber jacket and matching shirt, both of which were left unfastened, and a pair of Sol Sana boots.

Keeping her eyes down, she hurried through the terminal carrying a black leather holdall.

Bella and The Weeknd dated for two years before their split.

They were reunited briefly at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Paris at the end of November where Bella walked the runway and The Weeknd performed live.

The public display of affection between the hot new couple came as a surprise.

The former Disney starlet, who dated Justin Bieber on and off from 2010 to 2014, has just spent several months out of the spotlight getting treatment for anxiety and depression related to her lupus.

The insider added: 'Abel though always had a thing for Selena. He thinks she is extremely talented and sexy....... They are taking things slow and getting to know each other.'

In more evidence that Bella is finding it hard to take that her ex is already engaged in another high profile romance, her Bella's multi-millionaire property developer father Mohamed Hadid posted a message of support on his Instagram Wednesday.

Alongside a photo of the two of them together, he wrote: 'Daddy's little Girl. I love you to the moon and back one thousand and one times.'
