'It guaranteed I wasn't on it': Luke Cage star Mahershala Ali recalls his disastrous audition for Game of Thrones

Mahershala Ali was almost on Game of Thrones. 

The 42-year-old Luke Cage actor recalled that the audition for the HBO show was 'one of the worst of his life' as he talked to Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday. 

'I think my audition guaranteed that I wasn’t almost on Game of Thrones' Ali joked after the host asked him what happened.

'It was like for this merchant, do you remember this merchant who gets locked in a safe in season three or something like that?' the Moonlight star said of the role he went in for.

'I’d gone in for this casting director before, and I felt like I had two other wonky auditions with her, but I was really prepared this time around,

'I had all my lines memorized, had all these power moves and stances,' Ali explained before saying that he just couldn't get comfortable on the backless stools when he arrived at the HBO offices. 

'I think my audition guaranteed that I wasn’t almost on Game of Thrones' Ali joked after the host asked him what happened.

He didn't get the part and the director ended up telling him: 'You gotta loosen that up, that was really stiff' 

Ali told Kimmel that he concluded he should bring his own chair to future auditions. 

As well as Moonlight, Ali can be seen in Hidden Figures which is currently number one at the Box Office. 

The actor was born and raised in California and is married to Amatus Sami-Karim. 

Ali, 42, explained that the stools in the audition room had no backs so he was stiff throughout and the director told him: 'You gotta loosen that up, that was really stiff'
