Grey's Anatomy star Sarah Drew admits her heart 'breaks a little' when daughter reaches for the nanny

Like many working mothers, actress Sarah Drew experiences some guilt from time to time about leaving the home to pursue a career.

The 36-year-old mom of two, who plays Dr. April Kepner on Grey's Anatomy, said sometimes the consequences of having parenting help hits home a little too hard.

'I will say there are times when my daughter reaches for the nanny before she reaches for me, and my heart breaks a little,' she admitted this week, according to People.

But, she added, while juggling motherhood and a job isn't always easy, it's a path she's committed to.

'I really, really love my job. I’m a much more present mom because I go and do something that I love a lot,' she explained during an appearance at the Television Critics Association winter tour on Tuesday.

'I come home refreshed and energized to be mom. So it’s an interesting balance. I think I’m going to be challenged by it forever, and I welcome that challenge.'

Drew is mom to son Micah, four, and daughter Hannah, two with her husband Peter Lafner, who teaches at UCLA.

Meanwhile, Drew promised EW.com that there will be an episode in the upcoming season of the long-running ABC medical drama dedicated to her and Jessie Williams's characters.

'There’s going to be a Jackson and April episode, just the two of them,' she revealed. 'We’re dealing with a case and it’s just the two of us in Montana for the whole episode.'

The actress went on: 'I can tease that there’s a real turning point that happens for the two of them. They’re forced to be in the same space working together with no distraction outside of the norm, outside of anybody that they know, outside of any of the history. They’re going through something pretty big.'
