Greetings and salutations! TV Land picks up TV series based on 1988 cult movie Heathers

TV Land used to be a channel focused entirely on classic reruns.

But now it seems like the sky's the limit, as the channel announced on Friday that it would be picking up a series based on the 1988 cult classic Heathers.

After experimenting with several original half hour sitcoms and single camera comedies, Heathers will be the channel's first hour-long drama.

Big news! TV Land announced on Friday that it would be picking up a series based on the 1988 cult classic Heathers

Similar to the original dark comedy movie, the series is expected to follow high schoolers Veronica and J.D., originally played by Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, as they plot to kill off the Heathers, who have formed an abusive school clique.

The announcement was hyped via Instagram on Friday evening, with TV Land sharing what looked to be a promo for the new series.

In the photo, which features 'Heathers' in an 80s-style font, Jasmine Mathews, Melanie Field and Brendan Scannell, who play Heather McNamara, Heather Chandler and Heather Duke respectively, stand next to one another.

Melanie, who is grinning toothily, is especially prominent in a pink satin coat with fur trim and a t-shirt with a graphic of a gold mouth.

A little graphic: Similar to the original dark comedy movie, the series is expected to follow high schoolers Veronica and J.D., originally played by Winona Ryder and Christian Slater (pictured), as they plot to kill off the Heathers, who have formed an abusive school clique

Not pictured are Grace Victoria Cox, 21, and James Scully, who will play Veronica and J.D.

The caption reads 'Big news! We're picking up @heathers for a 10 episode season!'

Apparently Shannen Doherty, who played Heather Duke in the original, is also quite excited for the series.

Last month she posted a shot of herself on a balcony looking into the camera.

She captioned the snap: 'Sneak peek from the #Heathers set..... jealous much?'

Back in November, ET confirmed that 45-year-old actress, who is currently battling cancer, joined the production as a 'pivotal, unnamed character.'
