She's the American professional tennis player who favours healthy competition, including on the dance floor.

And Serena Williams recently spoke about the effort she put into mastering her moves in the presence of Beyoncé, after being approached to perform in the singer's Sorry music video last year.

The 35-year-old spoke to The Project on Friday and revealed what happened on set before twerking in front of Queen Bey.

Serena explained: 'I wanted to be perfect because I know she can dance.'

'I really wanted to make sure that I didn't miss a move...so I was rehearsing and rehearsing and I was sweating.

'Eventually all the make-up came off. I was drenched!' she added.

At this point, Serena said she was called to perform her part in the Sorry film clip - but insisted she needed more time.

'We were like, "We have to go to the set". I was like "I don't care, I have to get the moves right". It was a lot of fun.' she claimed.

She twerked alongside Beyoncé in the black and white film clip for the Lemonade album track while wearing a skimpy black leotard.

Beyoncé's Lemonade has been widely interpreted by fans and critics as being about her husband Jay-Z's rumoured infidelity.

Meanwhile, Serena told the TV panel she may have taken up ballet or another style of professional dance if she didn't pursue tennis.

The athlete recently announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian two weeks ago.
