'I left the hospital looking 5 months pregnant': Peta Murgatroyd says 'real life' means female bodies don't just shrink back into shape

She welcomed son Shai Aleksander with Maksim Chmerkovskiy on January 4. 

And Peta Murgatroyd revealed the reality of post-pregnancy as she candidly showcased her swollen post-birth tummy on Sunday. 

The 30-year-old beauty said she 'left the hospital looking 5 months pregnant' as she explained that it takes time to get back into shape.

Posting a in a bra and black leggings for a selfie in the mirror, the beauty wrote a searingly honest post which will, no doubt, be refreshing to mums everywhere.  

'Real life: I took this photo 8 days post birth. I left the hospital looking 5 months pregnant', she captioned, adding: 'Many people think a woman should shrink right back to her pre-birth weight immediately. That is just not the truth for most. 

'The female body is incredible and resilient, but healing and strengthening take time. Now it's time for patience and hard work. Lots of love to all the new mamas out there on the journey.'

Maksim, 36, revealed the couple had their first date night without their newborn on Saturday night. 

Sharing a picture kissing the beauty he joked about their new status as parents: 'First date night of 2017 with my queen Thanks @sushidojonyc for bomb sushi Me: "Baby you want some desert?" @petamurgatroyd : "My boobs are filling up. We gotta go" #parents'

He took to Twitter earlier this month to reveal that Peta had given birth to their first child after five in the morning.

'Shai Aleksander Chmerkovskiy 01/04/17 5:34am,' the proud new father tweeted. 

He also shared a heartwarming picture of himself cradling his week-old son with his back turned to the camera, writing: 'It's been one week plus one day of my fatherhood and I'm the happiest person that's ever lived.'

The Dancing With The Stars contestant also noted how he and his fiancé are keeping their newborn away from the limelight.

He wrote: 'I'm also feeling very protective and now understand what every parent in history have been going through for as long as humans have been giving birth. I don't let too many people come see my son and I don't want to put any of him on social media just yet.'

Adding: '@Petamurgatroyd and I just want to enjoy our little family, together with our loved ones, and take in all the precious moments which we'll never get back. So be sensitive please. Or not. Either way, hope everyone's year is off to an incredible start. Ours sure started with a bang. P.S. Farts, poops and throw-ups are the best!' 

Maksim did however share a blurred picture of his son in the background on Friday as he wrote: 'To the paps posted outside the house for the last three days: Not gonna happen! We got security ova here.'

The two of them have been dating on and off since 2012 and got engaged in 2015.

Their wedding is planned for this summer.  

'I can't wait to provide this baby with the tools to become a beautiful, kind person,' Maksim raved to People back in June. 

'I'm looking forward to nurturing something and just having the baby be the center of our world,' his wife-to-be added. 

'I'm looking forward to putting all our energy into this beautiful soul.'  

A DWTS cast member since 2011, Peta has enjoyed a prolific dancing career that has even included Broadway. 

Maksim competed as a professional dancer for fifteen seasons of Dancing With The Stars, but had a hiatus for a few seasons.
