A royal faux pas? The Crown's Matt Smith spotted smoking 'suspicious looking cigarette' outside a London pub while on a night out with pals

Matt Smith was pictured rolling and smoking a 'suspicious-looking' cigarette with pals outside a London pub earlier this week.

The Crown star, 34, may play Prince Philip in the acclaimed Netflix drama, however, he looked worlds apart from his royal portrayal as he sparked up on picnic bench.

The actor wore a black beanie with a matching coat, a white and blue striped scarf, black jeans and boots.

He sipped from a bottle of beer as he carefully prepared the cigarette, before standing up and taking a hearty drag.

MailOnline has contacted a representative for Matt and is awaiting comment. 

The former Doctor Who star returned to his seat and removed his hat as he continued to smoke opposite a blond friend.

Matt looked to be in high spirits as he shared laughs with his pals and walked off into the night recording himself and a male companion on his phone.

There wasn't any sign of the star's girlfriend stunning Lily James, 27. 

Before Christmas, a source claimed Matt couldn't wait to propose to his girlfriend of two years. 

A friend of the pair told the Mail On Sunday's Charlotte Griffiths: ‘Matt is chomping at the bit to propose and New York is the ideal place.

Earlier this month Lily was seen frolicking with Matt's sister Laura Jayne in Lake Como, Italy, following the latter's wedding to James Farmer.

The nuptials lasted five days and featured an Eighties-themed pool party with 70 inflatables.

Other guests, including designer Matthew Williamson, cavorted on giant inflatable ducks in the hotel pool by Lake Como.
