Sound familiar? Homeland is back in New York for season six with a President-Elect who's hostile to the CIA as show makes allusions to Trump

A difficult transition period with a President-Elect who's hostile towards the intelligence community.

Fiction was rather close to the truth as Homeland returned for the premiere of a sixth season on Sunday.

The Showtime series' return to American soil for Season Six was a poorly kept secret and saw Carrie Matherson back in NYC, where she is now heading a nonprofit firm that defends Muslims against discrimination.

Carrie's back: Homeland returned for the premiere of a sixth season on Sunday

It's set in a time period between a presidential election and the inauguration and focuses on the counter-terrorism efforts in New York nearly two decades after 9/11.

Carrie - played by Claire Danes - was seen at the end of series five saving thousands of lives by keeping a train station bomb from detonating, before keeping vigil at the bedside of Quinn after refusing his request to pull the plug.

He had been showing little signs of recovery after his chemical gas poisoning.

In 'Fair Game' it's quickly revealed that Quinn (Rupert Friend) survived, and is struggling with PTSD and partial paralysis and recovering at a Veteran's Hospital.

However, Quinn bolts from the hospital and when Carrie tracks him down he is at a flophouse, having been mugged after smoking crack and having sex with prostitutes.

Saul (Mandy Patinkin) and Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) brief the female President-elect Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) on ongoing CIA operations.

'If the war isn’t winnable, what are we doing there?' she asked them, before questioning them all about the agency’s 'lethal programs,' including drone and military operations.

After the briefing, Dar expresses concern to Saul that Keane may be planning to demilitarize the CIA.

Meanwhile, a young Muslim American, Sekou Bah, posts a series of videos online where he visits locations of past domestic terrorist attacks and chronicles what happened.

He is arrested by FBI Special Agent Ray Conlin and charged with materially supporting terrorism.

Carrie meets Sekou and prepares to represent him.

Conlin tells Carrie that they found Sekou in possession of plane tickets to Nigeria and $5,000 cash.

The season is set to conclude on Inauguration Day, when Madam Keane is scheduled to take the oath as president.

It continues next Sunday on Showtime at 9 ET.
