Hidden Figures counts up $20.5 million as it holds on to top spot at the box office for a second weekend

Hidden Figures, the inspirational true story of three black female mathematicians who helped NASA put the first men in space, soared into its second week on top of the weekend box office on Sunday.

The biographical comedy-drama, based on a book of the same name, stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae whose characters deal with segregation in the 1950s and 60s while they work on the complicated calculations that get astronaut John Glenn into orbit and back again.

It brought in $20.5 million in the US and Canada this weekend, earning $54.8 million since it premiered four weeks ago, according to Box Office Mojo.

La La Land, a nostalgic tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood song and dance musicals, rose from last week's fifth place to second with $14.5 million.

The eight Golden Globes the Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed out to the movie at its awards bash in Beverly Hills last Sunday undoubtedly added an extra spring to the film's step.

Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, it has now earned just over $74 million at home and nearly $129 million globally.

That's a great return on its frugal $30 million budget.
