Rory McIlroy says dumping ex Caroline Wozniacki led him to 'good place' where there's 'no bull****, no acting, no show'

Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy infamously dumped Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in May 2014 after invitations for their wedding had been sent out.

At the time, both were at the top of their respective sports.

And in a new interview with the Irish Independent, McIlroy insisted once again that he'd made the right decision, saying it had led him to 'a good place' where there is 'no bull****, no acting, no show.'

Outspoken: Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy said in a new interview that dumping fiancee Caroline Wozniacki, pictured with him in 2013, had led him to 'a good place' with 'no bull****'

'I thought at the time that being with someone that was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer,' the champion golfer reflected about his romance with the top seeded tennis pro.

'But it isn’t, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world. And that’s why I feel in such a good place now,' he told the newspaper.

McIlroy dumped Wozniacki in a brief phone call, she later revealed, adding that his decision to call time on their relationship came out of the blue.

They had dated for three years and got engaged on 31 December 2013.

New love: McIlroy is currently dating former PGA employee Erica Stoll whom, he says, leads 'a normal life' and doesn't want 'to change me in any way'

The golf player has gone on to date Erica Stoll, a former employee of the PGA whom he met in Palm Beach, Florida.

'I found it refreshing being with someone who was living a normal life rather than, ‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!’' McIlroy explained.

'I don’t feel Erica wants to change me in any way. I can be myself around her.'

Champ: McIlroy is one of three players - along with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods - to win three majors by the age of 25. He's pictured at the DP World Tour Championship last November
