Anti-Trump protesters have been seen clashing with police and being pepper sprayed in Washington DC. A massive crowd of those against the president-elect had gathered outside the National Press Club, which was holding the 'DeploraBall' - a celebratory event organized by Trump supporters from the racist 'alt-right'. Hundreds of demonstrators were on the street outside the press club, many chanting and holding signs. Videos shot by people in the protest showed the anti-Trump crowd confronted and was confronted by pro-Donald fans.

After an entreaty by her husband, Melania Trump gave remarks in Washington about the hard work ahead, invoking her husband's campaign slogan to a gathering of GOP lawmakers - and earned a kiss when she was all done. She said it was 'great to be here' and thanked lawmakers for their support. After speaking for just a minute, she was escorted off stage by her husband, and quickly went to the back of the room to leave. She spoke at the luxury hotel owned by her husband in a building leased from the federal government.

Celebrities, including Robert de Niro and Cher, joined several thousand protesters on the streets of New York near the Trump International Hotel on Thursday night to protest against the president-elect. Protesters also gathered outside Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. on Thursday night with police apparently clashing with the crowd.

Woody Johnson, who owns the NFL team and is a Johnson & Johnson family heir, will be the USA's ambassador to London during Brexit, Trump announced at a speech in Washington. The announcement was made as a passing remark as the president-elect hailed his new cabinet and senior staff at a luncheon at the Trump Hotel in Washington D.C. Listing senior guests present he turned to Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader in the Senate, and described him as ' sitting next to the ambassador Woody Johnson, going to Saint James'. Trump said: 'Congratulations, Woody.'

Ivana Trump was photographed leaving her New York City townhouse on Thursday afternoon and making her way down to Washington DC, where on Friday she will watch as her first husband Donald is sworn in as the 45th president of the United States. She will be joining her three children with Donald - Donald Jr., Ivanka (inset top in 1998) and Eric - as well as her eight grandchildren for the big day in the nation's capital. And also scheduled to attend will be Donald's second wife Marla Maples, who was accused at the time of breaking up Ivana's marriage to the billionaire businessman. When asked as she was leaving her home on Thursday if she thought her ex-husband would make a good president, Ivana said: 'Yes, he will.'

Gunshots have reportedly been fired in a police chase through central Melbourne during lunchtime. Witnesses are reporting that at least 12 pedestrians have been injured after being struck by a car that ploughed into a crowd of shoppers on busy Bourke Street. Others said they heard gunshots ring out through the Victorian capital, with emergency services on the scene.

Pyke and Rytting were both handed 13-year jail terms today.

A shocking video shows disability campaigner Kerdesan Gallardo (inset, top left) attempting to get on a packed bus outside the Supreme Court in London. The courthouse had just minutes before seen a new decree rule that wheelchair users should be given greater priority over mothers with baby buggies on buses. As Ms Gallardo tries to board the 148 to Shepherd's Bush, she points out to the driver that an empty buggy is in the priority space (inset). The driver goes upstairs to find the mother, but she seemingly refuses to budge, causing other passengers to become irate at Ms Gallardo for holding up the bus (main picture). It comes after bus drivers were told they must now do more to force non-wheelchair users to vacate the 'priority' space if required by a disabled person.

British photographer Pete Oxford took these amazing photographs of the Huaorani tribe, who live in the rainforests of Ecuador, by a tributary of the mighty Amazon river. A Huaorani man returns from a day hunting monkeys in the jungle (left). They are experts at shinning up trees and lying in wait for the primates, which they kill with poisoned darts fired from blowpipes (top right). Monkey meat is a staple of their diet, which also includes peccary pigs and toucans aswell as plants and herbs foraged in the forest by the women. But the tree climbing plays havoc with their feet (bottom right).

Up to 38 people are believed to have been killed when the hotel, in the remote village of Farindola, was crushed under a 6ft wall of snow (top right) yesterday as four earthquakes hit the central Italian region of Abruzzo. Snow engulfed the three-storey hotel, causing part of it to collapse (inset) and filling corridors with snow and rubble. Two people have been rescued with one seen being led from the scene (bottom right). One survivor Giampaolo Parete, 38, a chef who was on vacation, made a desperate phone call to his boss after the avalanche hit. Rescuers are continuing to dig through the snow (main) to look for those that remain missing.

Anneke Lucas, 53, was sold into a murderous paedophile network in Belgium when she was just six years old in 1969. Recalling her sickening abuse, she said: 'I was raped many, many, many times. I don't have any scars to show how many times I was raped. Usually it was a full night and weekend and so I gathered I was raped for about six hours a week - 1,716 hours before I reached the age of 12.' A Spanish bagpipe band have performed an astonishing version of rockers AC/DC's famous song Thunderstruck. The band - Rondalla de Santa Eulalia de Mos - played their piece wearing traditional local outfits. A video of their version became a social media favourite after it received nearly one million views in just a few days. Backed up by Spanish maracas and drums they rip through the song as an ecstatic crowd cheers them on. The group - who come from Pontevedra in north-western Spain's Galicia region - normally perform regional music. But they astonished the audience at a traditional music festival to celebrate the end of Spain's Three Kings festival when they performed the rock anthem. The band - who have also played their version of the Game of Thrones theme - have been astonished by the reaction.

It seems that there is no look-at-me ruse Gwyneth has attempted that Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden hasn't then had a go at herself. Mourners turned up at Woking Crematorium in the group's double-decker tour bus for the gig-themed farewell for Parfitt. Quo's current line-up attended the service - led by frontman Francis Rossi, Parfitt's bandmate for 50 years. Rossi was joined by Andy Bown, John 'Rhino' Edwards, Leon Cave and Parfitt's replacement, Richie Malone. Some mourners wore what looked like backstage passes while one came with a flower wreath shaped as a guitar. Parfitt's slate-grey coffin arrived in a four-car procession with floral guitar wreaths and others spelling 'Dad'.

Prisoners at Hitler's Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria were forced to climb 186 steps (pictured, left, during WWII and, left inset, today), while carrying 50-kilogram blocks of granite, 'without a second's rest' for 12 hours a day. A collection of harrowing images from the German Federal Archive show prisoners undertaking back-breaking labour at the camp, which was built around a working quarry with the mission to work inmates to death. Prisoners are pictured (right) doing levelling work and digging at the quarry. Between 122,766 and 320,000 people died at Mauthausen before the camp's liberation by American troops in 1945. Prince Louis and Princess Tessy of Luxembourg spoke glowingly about their ten year marriage in a touching joint interview just four months before announcing their divorce on Wednesday. The royal couple appeared relaxed and happy last September (inset) as Louis revealed his nerves on their wedding day (right) in 2006, and Tessy spoke of her pride of marrying into his family as a 'commoner'. Now their image of a close-knit family appears to have been a facade as the Royal Highnesses announced their marriage was over.

Shiraz Sharif, 45, (bottom left) and his wife Salina, 46, (top left) from Levenshulme, Manchester, have been sentenced to jail after being found guilty of drugs and money laundering offences. Shiraz Sharif fled to Pakistan ahead of the trial at Manchester Crown Court last November, leaving his wife to stand trial alone.The couple's criminal activities were uncovered after police found cannabis and MDMA (bottom right) stashed in the attic during a raid on their home in June 2014. The pair drove a £60,000 Range Rover and £12,000 Audi (top right), as well as spending £100,000 on private school fees for their three children.

One handcuffed herself to the Turkish parliament's rostrum to protest against the controversial reform package that would give President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office more control. The move sparked fighting (pictured) between female MPs that reportedly resulted in two of them being taken to hospital. Independent politician Aylin Nazliaka attached herself to the microphone, forcing parliament's deputy speaker to twice call a recess and halt debate on the draft constitutional amendments for some two hours.

The cherry tree (left) at the front of the Old Court at Cambridge University's prestigious Clare College has been cut down. The tree, thought to be about 70 years old, had to be felled (right and inset) after it was discovered to have bracket fungus. The fungus causes decay and rot and would have eventually killed the tree, causing it to become dangerously unstable. It had already begun to lean badly. After being felled it was cut into sizeable chunks of wood that will be dried and treated before the non-infected bits are be turned into coasters.
