Batman V Superman gets a superhero size EIGHT nominations for the Razzie Awards celebrating 2016's worst films

They really didn't like it.

Superhero face/off Batman V Superman; Dawn Of Justice, co-starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, nabbed an impressive eight nominations for the Razzie Awards, a list of the year's worst films that includes Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Julia Roberts.

But the blockbuster, described as a 'WTF comic-book battle royale,' was beaten by fashion industry satire Zoolander 2's nine nominations, announced on Monday.

Zoolander 2, a sequel 15 years in the making that bombed at the box office, picked up nine Razzie nominations, including nods for director and star Ben Stiller as well as co-stars Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell.

Affleck earned a Worst Actor nomination for his role as Batman in the big-budget movie, which is also a Razzie pick for worst film, sequel and screenplay.

Although slammed by critics, audiences embraced the action picture, which went on to take in some $873 million at the global box office.

Other worst picture Razzie nominees are the De Niro comedy Dirty Grandpa; action movie Independence Day: Resurgence, starring Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum; fantasy adventure Gods Of Egypt with Gerard Butler, and the documentary Hillary's America: The Secret History Of The Democratic Party.

Julia was nominated Worst Actress for her role in the romantic comedy Mother's Day, in which the dark-haired star grabbed attention for wearing a distracting ginger bob wig.

Johnny Depp and his 'vomitously vibrant costume' in Alice Through The Looking Glass, was among the Worst Screen Combo contenders.

He was joined by what Razzie organizers dubbed 'the entire cast of once respected actors' from Collateral Beauty, which starred A-listers Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton and Kate Winslet.

Both Affleck and his 'BFF (Baddest Foe Forever)' Henry Cavill also made the Worst Combo cut for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as individual noms for Worst Actor.

The tongue-in-cheek Razzies, created in 1981 as the Golden Raspberry Awards, serve as an antidote to Hollywood's Oscars ceremony.

Nominees and winners of the Razzies are voted for online by around 1,000 Razzie members from 24 countries, who sign up online and pay a $40 membership fee.

Winners of the year's worst films - if they turn up - are given a gold, spray-painted trophy at a ceremony held on February 25, the eve of the Academy Awards.
