Natalie Portman pays tribute to her Jackie co-star Sir John Hurt after he dies at age 77 

Natalie Portman has paid tribute to the late actor Sir John Hurt, who died on Wednesday at the age of 77.

The two worked together on her most recent film Jackie, about Jacqueline Kennedy.

'I’m so extremely sad to hear of John’s passing,' the pregnant star said in a statement shared by Entertainment Weekly.

The actors also worked together on the 2005 film V for Vendetta. 

She added: 'I was lucky enough to make two films with him — both of which were taken to the next level because of his performances.

'He was the most talented actor, and also a deeply good and funny and poetic and smart and warm human being.

'I send my love to his family at this terrible time, and join his fans in watching his films that we are lucky enough to have forever.'

Jackie director Pablo Larrain also spoke.

'John was invincible. Unflinching. Eternal,' Pablo said.

Hurt won Oscar nominations for the Elephant Man and captured the hearts of millions for his roles in Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

The star, one of Britain's most treasured actors, died at his home in Norfolk after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, it was revealed today.

His widow, Anwen Hurt, today said it will be 'a strange world' with out the actor, whose death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the showbusiness industry, with director Mel Brooks and J K Rowling among those paying tribute.

Mrs Hurt added: 'John was the most sublime of actors and the most gentlemanly of gentlemen with the greatest of hearts and the most generosity of spirit. He touched all our lives with joy and magic and it will be a strange world without him.'

Sir John was well known for roles including Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant, the title role in The Elephant Man and wand merchant Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter films.
