James Cameron has branded Donald Trump and the new White House team as 'insane' and idiotic in a scathing interview.

The award-winning director took his shots at Trump and his cabinet choices during an interview with the Daily Beast that was published on Sunday.

Cameron, an environmental activist, said he is most concerned Trump will undo positive steps taken in recent years to fight climate change.

'Years ago, we sort of spotted the iceberg ahead of us and we called out the order to turn, and we’ve been slowly, slowly, slowly trying to turn this big-a** ship to not hit the iceberg, and then Trump grabbed the tiller and just plunged it right back at the center of the iceberg,' Cameron said.

'So am I worried? Of course. I’m like anyone of good conscience and reasonable intelligence.

'I think we’re the biggest freakin’ idiot civilization in history right now, and they’ll probably be talking about us 4,000 years from now scratching their heads - like they talk about Atlantis: "Who are those guys? What did they do to piss off the gods so much that they’re buried under a hundred feet of mud right now?"'

The 62-year-old then went on to specifically target Trump's pick to head the EPA, Scott Pruitt.

'These people are insane. But I’m keeping my head down, doing the stuff that I thought I would be doing if Hillary was elected,' Cameron said of Trump (pictured) and his team

'By the way, he nominated a guy to run the EPA who has eight lawsuits against the EPA, and refuses to recuse himself from those lawsuits!' Cameron said.

'It’s basically the upside-down world right now, and the kind of dialogue coming out of these guys sounds like George Orwell.

'There’s no such thing as an alternate fact!'

Cameron then wrapped up his political remarks by saying: 'These people are insane. But I’m keeping my head down, doing the stuff that I thought I would be doing if Hillary was elected.

'By the way, he nominated a guy to run the EPA who has eight lawsuits against the EPA, and refuses to recuse himself from those lawsuits!' Cameron said, in reference to Scott Pruitt (pictured during a confirmation hearing on January 18)

'I’m making my Avatar films, I’m doing my climate work, I’m doing my sustainable agriculture work. You can only do what you can do.'

Cameron does not just speak about green causes, he has donated to a number of charities while also getting involved personally.

He has completed dives in the Deepsea Challenger to the deepest parts of the Mariana Trench - the voyage helped lead to new discoveries in marine biology.

The director also revealed in 2015 that a 1 megawatt solar array was attached to the roof of a sound-studio where much of the work on the upcoming Avatar sequels is being done, meaning it is energy neutral.
