Following in her footsteps: Jenna stepped out with her boyfriend amid reports her ex Richard Madden has been tipped to star in Doctor Who

The outing came as her former flame Richard has been tipped as a possible replacement for Peter Capaldi in Doctor Who.

Peter announced he would be stepping down on Monday in a Radio 2 interview.

He revealed it was 'time to move on' as he detailed his plans to leave by the end of the year.

A source told The Sun: 'Richard’s name has come up in discussions in the past, and will be high on the list of potential replacements when the formal casting process gets under way.

'He’s very different to Peter, obviously a lot younger, but part of the appeal to regenerating the Doctor every few years is to reinvent the character.

'And with Jenna having now left, the timing could be perfect.'

If Richard were to take the role he would be following in Jenna's acting footsteps, as she played the Doctor's assistant, Clara, for three years before leaving in 2015.

Richard has previously expressed his love for the show but insisted he could not take a role whilst Jenna was still in it.

He revealed: 'I’d love to be in Doctor Who one day — it’s one of my favourite shows, but not while Jenna’s in the show.

'I mean, I love Doctor Who. I’ve always loved Doctor Who — I’ve watched it since I was a kid.

'We’ll just see what happens in the future.'

Jenna began dating the Game Of Thrones star in 2012, but the pair called an end to their romance in the summer of 2016.

After her split, Jenna moved on with Tom - her Victoria co-star. Following the premiere of their period drama in August, speculation that they were an item began in September when The Mail On Sunday revealed that they had been enjoying a private romance for almost a year.

The source said: 'They’ve been together for months, on and off since last summer.'

Another source added: 'The reason the chemistry is so tangible is because they are dating in real life. Those scenes are very real. They are completely hooked on one another.'

It was even reported in late September that the duo had moved in together, having known each other in separate acting circles for as long as three years.
