'I am a very blessed man': Elton John's Canadian husband David Furnish is granted British citizenship 27 years after emigrating as he celebrates in sweet snap with their sons

After 27 years living in Britain, David Furnish revealed he was granted British citizenship on Tuesday.

Taking to Instagram, the 54-year-old Canadian husband of Elton John shared a sweet snap of himself in the Chelsea Old Town Hall with sons Zachary, six, and Elijah, four, as he said he felt 'very blessed'. 

The trio were pictured from behind as they gazed at a picture of the Queen.

The Toronto native captioned the shot: 'A very emotional morning for me. This morning, I was sworn in as a British citizen.

'As an immigrant, I moved to the UK more than 27 years years ago. I was welcomed with open arms. This spirit of acceptance, tolerance and diversity has allowed me to achieve a life beyond my wildest dreams. 

'I am a very blessed man, and I am extremely proud to now carry both British and Canadian passports. @eltonjohn #ShareTheLove.'

The ceremony came just weeks after he celebrated the 11th anniversary of his civil partnership with Elton.  

Elton and David formed a civil partnership on December 21 2005 on the same day the Civil Partnerships act came into force.

After gay marriage became legal, the couple then wed married in Windsor, Berkshire, on 21 December 2014, the ninth anniversary of their civil partnership.

Their first child, Zachary, was born in December 2010 in California via surrogate, and in January 2013, they welcomed Elijah through the same surrogate. 

Despite being a millionaire, Elton has prided himself on raising his sons to know the value of money.

In an interview with The Guardian, the Rocket Man singer said: 'They get £3 pocket money, but £1 is for charity, £1 is for saving and £1 is for spending, they get three coins and put them in separate jars.'
