Chrissy Metz's mom reveals This Is Us star's secret heartbreak over failed marriage before finding fame in NBC drama

As Kate in This Is Us, Chrissy Metz deals with her share of emotional turmoil.

But heartbreak is something she's familiar with in her real life too, according to  a report on RadarOnline Wednesday.

Chrissy's mom Denise Hodge told the tabloid website her daughter was left devastated following the end of a marriage before she became famous.

Secret heartbreak: This Is Us star Chrissy Metz had a secret marriage that ended in divorce in 2015 just before she found fame on the breakout NBC drama This Is Us

The plus-sized actress, 36, moved from Florida to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of fame and stardom.

Once established on the West Coast she met and fell in love with a British freelance screenwriter Martyn Eaden and the two tied the knot in a small ceremony in Santa Barbara, California.

'Martyn was a nice guy, her first real love,' Hodge said, speaking to RadarOnline from her home in Gainesville, Florida.

But their happiness was short-lived and they split up in January 2013, with Eaden filing for divorce in November 2014.

'I remember when Chrissy told me they had broken up, but she never really went into why they split, and that was her business,' her mom said.

Unknown no more: Chrissy, 36, moved from Florida to Los Angeles ion her twenties to pursue an acting career and finally made it after being cast as Kate on This Is US

Divorced: Her mom Denise Hodges, who still lives in Florida, told RadarOnline her daughter and met and married a British freelance screenwriter and was heartbroken when they split up

However, Chrissy had a hard time dealing with her failed marriage and refused to respond to her estranged husband's request for a divorce.

In the end, he persuaded a judge that his petition was uncontested and the divorce was granted in 2015, five years after they wed.

Her marriage, though, had remained a secret in Tinseltown and Chrissy has since found fame as one of the stars of the breakout NBC drama This Is Us.

Meanwhile, the actress also appears to have found love gain, this time with John Stancil, a cameraman on the tearjerker TV series.

The new couple pair made their public debut for the first time at a SAG Awards party this past weekend.

Chrissy opened up to People about her new man in December, describing him as 'a sweet treat' and 'wonderful'.

'No matter what size I’ve been, I’ve never had issues dating,' she added. 'I’ve found really wonderful men, and I do believe that like attracts like.'

'It’s one of those things where if you’re secure and you’re happy mostly, you find really wonderful people who come into your life.'

Moving on: Since splitting with Martyn, Chrissy has found love with This Is Us cameraman John Stancil. The pair took their relationship public at an event in LA on January 28
