And six seasons later, Kerry Washington was overjoyed to be spending her 40th birthday on the show's set.
On Instagram on Tuesday, the actress shared a photo of herself pretending to take a bite out of her oversize cake.

'I can't believe this is our 6th season. Jeez Louize. I LOVE THESE PEOPLE.'
In the snap, Kerry, hair pulled back in rollers, leaned over fruit-filled, white cake, decorated with frosting and berries.
'Happiest of birthdays Kerry!,' it read.
Colourful cupcakes were placed around the oversized tasty confection.
