  • The Pretty Little Liars star says she has struggled with acne but doesn't see a dermatologist

In a leather motorcycle jacket, black cropped jeans and high heel  black ankle booties, Ashley Benson, 27, was the epitome of a downtown It girl at an event in New York City last night.

But behind the Pretty Little Liars star's picture-perfect complexion and bed-heady lob, was a struggle almost every woman can relate to - acne.

Ashley was on hand at the Nestle Shield Center to help launch Differin gel as an over-the-counter acne remedy.

Pretty little truthteller! Ashley Benson, 27, teamed up with Differin, an acne gel treatment that is now available over-the-counter, to help her fans - and herself - battle pimples

The struggle is real: Breakouts have made Ashley feel so insecure in the past that she hasn't wanted to leave the house, she said at event in New York City on Wednesday night

Differin, which was previously available only with a prescription, is a retinoid acne gel that helps to both clear current flare-ups and prevent future ones by reducing inflammation and clogged pores.

'I know when I have any breakout and I have to be on camera or at an event and take photos, it can be really uncomfortable and make you super insecure and make you want to stay in your house all day, which I have done before,' Ashley told the crowd of beauty editors gathered at the event.

'For me, being an actress and working 16 to 18 hours a day on set or travelling all the time or going to events, I constantly have make-up on 24/7... and obviously that takes a toll on your skin,' she continued.

'I'm pretty good about washing my face and taking care of my skin because I have to. But for me, I don't really see a dermatologist. I've never really found the time to do it, and to be honest, I've always been a little bit lazy about that kind of stuff.'

'I'm really open with that kind of stuff': Ashley isn't afraid to post photos of herself with pimple cream all over her face to her 15.6M Instagram fans

Because she knows how many of her fans also struggle with acne, Ashley has made a point in the past to post photos of herself wearing pimple cream to her 15.6M Instagram followers.

'I'm really open with that kind of stuff,' she said, 'so it's really cool to be able to show my fans that there is a product out there that can treat their acne, prevent their acne and that's affordable and you can get it at any drugstore.'

As Ashley spoke, you could see a hint of the pink hair she debuted back in December coming through her blonde locks.

Yay or nay? The Anaheim-born blonde originally debuted her bubble-gum pink locks for her social media followers on her 27th birthday (pictured Dec. 18 and Oct. 29)
