Ruby Rose came out to mother at the tender age of 12 years old, but according to the actress, her mom knew that she was a lesbian by the time she was six.

The 30-year-old Orange Is the New Black star sat down with Sunday Today anchor Willie Geist to discuss what it was like to come out to her mother Katia Langenheim at such a young age. 

'That was a fine thing to do,' Ruby recalled. 'When I told her, she was like, "I know."

'She knew when I was six, apparently,' she added. 'I was like, really mom? I don't think I even knew. I didn't know that was possible, but apparently it is and makes sense.'

Although it ended up being a positive experience, Ruby admitted that she did have some concerns about what she was going to say to her mom.   

'I was worried because I didn't quite know it was a thing,' she explained. 'I knew how I felt.

'I knew what I kind of identified as, but the words "gay" or "lesbian" — I didn't know anyone else that was gay or a lesbian, so I didn't really know how to word it.'

Ruby said she just tried to explain her feelings to the best of her ability, and, luckily, her mom was more than understanding.

'I was like, "I think I should let you know that when I eventually get a boyfriend, that will be a girl." And she was just like, "I know."'

Ruby's mom had reminded her that she hated Barbie's growing up, and she told Willie that she actually 'cut Ken and Barbie's heads off' as a child. 

The actress, who started saving for gender reassignment surgery at the age of five, describes herself as gender fluid and has always spoken openly about her gender. 

As a teenager, she realized she didn't want to transition, she just wanted to be more comfortable in her own skin.

Ruby has previously opened up about how she was taunted by schoolmates because of her sexuality, even being hospitalized after classmates attacked her by smashing metal chairs into the back of her head.

The Australian star is bipolar and has battled depression but has since used her own experiences to become a mouthpiece for the LGBT community. 

Ruby is dating singer Jessica Origliasso of The Veronicas, and the Cosmopolitan magazine cover star joked that according to the news she has been 'engaged five times' already.

'For me, marriage is more about equal rights than the act of getting married,' she said in the publication's March issue. 

'When you don't have equal rights, it trickles down to kids who think, "My aunt's gay so she can't get married," or "I'm weird because I feel the same way." 

'So it's important to break down that barrier. I'm more interested in having a loving, healthy, long-term relationship with someone I might want to have kids with someday.'
