Who You Gonna Call? The boys dress up as Ghostbusters in Super Bowl trailer for season 2 of Stranger Things

It's cribbed nostalgic archetypes from some of the Eighties most classic films.

And now Stranger Things has tapped into another cultural touchstone for season 2 of the beloved Netflix sci-fi horror series.

In a trailer released during Super Bowl Sunday, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) dress up as Ghostbusters.

The boys stand outside of the middle school in the town of Hawkins, wearing the costumes.

The trailer hints to even more fantastic and horrifying events, concluding on an image of a terrifying force overwhelming the small Indiana town.

The addition of Ghostbusters now includes Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in the hallowed list of Eighties homages, which previously featured such luminaries as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Robert Zemeckis. 

The cast of the show are coming off a highlight for the year after earning a gong for best ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

In his speech castmember David Harbour implored his fellow actors to use their fame for good - alluding to the current political upheaval in the US.

'In light of everything that's going on in the world today, it's difficult to celebrate the already-celebrated Stranger Things,' he began.

'But this award from you who take your craft seriously and earnestly believe, like me, that great acting can change the world is a call to arms from our fellow craftsmen and women to go deeper.

And through our art to battle against fear, self-centeredness and exclusivity of our predominantly narcissistic culture and through our craft to cultivate a more empathetic and understanding society by revealing intimate truths that serve as a forceful reminder to folks that when they feel broken and afraid and tired, they are not alone.

'We are united in that we are all human beings and we are all together on this horrible, painful, joyous, exciting and mysterious ride that is being alive.'

The cast of Stranger Things was given the coveted Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series gong.
