Tapping into the Yarragadee is a short-term solution

(Statement from Paul Llewellyn, WA Greens MLC)

Western Australia is the grips of a historic water crisis that requires a long-term commitment to water efficiency and conservation.

Tapping into the Yarragadee is a short-term solution, equivalent to sweeping the problem under the carpet - our children will hold us to account for this decision and we must not let that happen.

Today, the Greens will introduce two important initiatives into the Parliament of WA.

First, we will read in our new Water Conservation Targets Bill (2007) that will oblige the Water Corporation to reduce water consumption by introducing large-scale water efficiency and conservation measures.

Secondly, the Upper House will debate our Urgency Motion:

‘that this House calls on the Western Australian Government to abandon plans to tap 45GL of water from the South West Yarragadee and to adopt widespread water efficiency, recycling and conservation measures.’

Help us deliver our river of protest, bearing 1800 signed postcards to the Premier and the Minister for Water Resources at Parliament House.

Join us in the public gallery of the Legislative Council to support the Greens’ Urgency Motion at 3.30pm today.
