Chinese firefighters have rescued a four-year-old girl from a washing machine after she became stuck after climbing inside the machine because she thought it would be fun.

Firefighters were forced to dismantle the inner section of the machine in order to free her, and she was pulled to safety.

Such incidents are common in China and in rare cases, can result in deaths if the machine is turned on while the child is inside.

The girl's name was not given, but it was said she climbed inside the machine because she thought it would be fun.

Realising she was trapped, her panicked parents, in Xuzhou, in east China's Jiangsu province, then called emergency services.

In July last year a three-year-old in Suzhow, Anhui province, had to cut from a washing machine with an angle grinder.

Named locally as Peng, his parents spent 30 minutes trying to remove him before giving up and calling emergency services.

And in September, a little girl in Zhejiang province crawled inside a machine out of curiosity.

When firefighters arrived, they spent 15 minutes extricating her from the washer using power tools.

Video of the rescue showed the young girl sobbing while her mother comforts her and uses a coat to cover her face.

In 2013, two girls aged two and four died in China after their parents claimed they climbed inside and accidentally switched their machine on before shutting the door.
