A cultural institution, Bond on film has taken on a new life far beyond the books. As such, experts in the genre talked to MailOnline Travel to unpick which actor enjoyed the most extravagant and varied locations during his tenure in the role.

Graham Rye, Editor of 007 magazine, said: 'Roger Moore is the most travelled of the Bonds in the official films.

'They became travelogues, especially Moonraker which was all over the place from France, to Italy, Argentina and Brazil. It just became a country hopping event.

'It's not necessary to the story but these exotic travels will have an affect on people. Bond fans travel to destinations just because Bond has been there.'

Agreeing, author of James Bond's Cuisine: 007's Every Last Meal, Matt Sherman, told MailOnline Travel: 'Roger Moore was the most travelled Bond to date in the films and visited some of the most exotic locations including Thailand, Phuket, Hong Kong, Corfu, India, Germany behind the Iron Curtain, New Orleans and the Louisiana swamps, Jamaica, Cairo, an underwater lair and outer space.'

To journey in the footsteps of the travel icon, Sherman added: 'Bond would recommend to bring clothes for all occasions. Better to be a tad overdressed than under, and be confident.

'Allow the locals to show you the best entertainment and cuisine and cultivate relationships with chefs de cuisine and maître d's. Stay in elegant hotels off the tourist path. Have a few key phrases of the local language in hand.'

TOP 5 COUNTRIES VISITED BY BOND

1. The UK - 32 visits

2. The US -15 visits

3. Italy- 7 visits

4 China and Russia both - 5 visits each.

The first actor to play the titular role on Hollywood film, Sean Connery's 007 captured imaginations and sparked the first wave of wanderlust amongst fans.

Connery plays the second most travelled Bond in the franchise's cinematic history.

When the special agent first erupted on screen in Dr No, his suave swagger and dry asides earned him a legion of followers both male and female.

Rye told MailOnline Travel: 'When Dr No came out in 1962 very few people were travelling to foreign climates. You'd only go to Jamaica then if you were well heeled.

'It made you think "wow these places exist. I've got to go and find them".

'It opened up international travel to a lot of people, especially kids. His job took him to wonderful places.

'Dr No was so different to anything that came out in all of the years prior to it. It came at the right time and had an effect on people. He goes out there, he's got a job to do and he does it. He gets waylaid by ladies and baddies but you know he won't be killed. He's always entertaining and it's always fun. It's wish fulfilment.'

Overlooking the Spanish steps much of Daniel Craig's most recent Bond outing takes place in Rome and The Vatican city

In this week's film release, Bond's itchy feet see him dashing between hot and cold destinations. In just four films, Daniel Craig is hot on the heels of Roger Moore and Sean Connery with his jetsetting antics.

To follow in his footsteps (perhaps without the car chases) a holiday in Rome is in order. Bed down in front of St Paul's Basilica at Hotel Lord Byron.

For the wintry action-packed element of the film, stay at Alpine hotel, Das Central in the heart of Sölden, Austria as the hotel's gourmet mountain restaurant, Ice Q, is one of the locations featured in the film.

In contrast Morocco's desertscape was a haunting landscape for the train sequence. To enjoy Morocco's striking natural wonders Lawrence of Arabia offer luxury tours.

During the longest opening sequence of a Bond film ever, the spotlight was stolen by Zocalo's breathtaking rooftops and the dizzying Day of the Dead festival in Mexico city. To immerse yourself in the colourful revelry of the occasion, Last Frontiers provide a trip.
