Steve 'Commando' Willis dons shorts and trainers to InStyle Man Of Style awards as he announces active wear range to rival partner Michelle Bridges'

Former military man-turned-TV trainer Steve 'Commando' Willis laughed about the current activewear trend just hours before announcing his first range.

The Biggest Loser said the recent spoof videos, starring comedians and singer Ellie Goulding, 'expresses 100 per cent' how popular sportswear it today in all aspects of life.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia at the Audi InStyle Man Of Style Awards in Sydney on Wednesday night, he said: 'That's a crack up,' he said of the Skit Box parody clip, adding: 'Everyone's wearing activewear for every facet of life - I think that's great!'

Later in the evening the 39-year-old's new range KIT was announced, designed by underwear and swimwear brand Ristevski Macheda and including both men's and women's collections.

'Certain fashions are for certain things but activewear just crosses all those barriers,' he said.

The fitness guru, who is known for being most comfortable in relaxed and casual clothing, arrived at the Awards ceremony at the Archie Rose Distilling Co wearing long black shorts with a black T-shirt.

For a pop of colour, he added his favourite accessory of the moment - statement socks.

'I've got a whole array of different socks and colours and things like that, it's a bit of fun as well,' he told DMA.

'I like to dress functional,' Commando said of his personal style, adding: 'I like to feel like I can move'.

'Yeah I'll put a suit on and all those things from time-to-time, but where I can just be myself in that sense - that's relaxed and smart at the same time and I'm comfortable in it, that's the direction I'd rather steer in,' he revealed.

Posing solo on the black carpet, his TV co-star and real life partner, Michelle Bridges, skipped the cameras near the photo wall and headed straight for the entrance.

Dressed in a black skirt and top combo, the heavily pregnant personal trainer was snapped chatting to Pacific Magazines Publisher, Jackie Frank, while Commando spoke to the media.

Speaking about his lady love's influence on his style, he simply said: 'She supports it.'

The couple, who already go head-to-head as trainers on TBL: Familes, are now set to go head-to-head in business as well, with Michelle already having her own activewear range.

The first-time-mum is estimated to be worth $53 million, thanks to her Big W clothing collection, her 12 Week Body Transformation challenge, as well as books and DVDs.

Earlier this year, the entrepreneur made her debut on the BRW's Rich Women List, coming in at number 29 in a list noting the 30 richest self-made women in Australia.

And as Michelle's stock continues to rise, Commando appears to be taking a leaf out of her book and building a brand to rival his partner's.

First, the father-to-be launched his own 12 week body overhaul program in July 2014 before the announcement of his clothing range on Wednesday.

‘When you spend your life in workout gear and you’re surrounded by others that do the same, you gain a lot of knowledge about what works and what doesn't,' Commando said in the announcement.

'Developing this activewear range with someone who literally lives and breathes the lifestyle brought an authenticity to the design process like never before,’ the designers boasted.

The KIT collection will be available online in November.
