  • Costumes, wigs and face-paint all came out as they transformed
  • Genie Bouchard opted for the minimalist all-black look of Catwoman
  • Floyd Mayweather insisted he must go as the richest superhero
  • Nico Rosberg also took time out from his F1 schedule to get in on the act

It's that time of year again when the costumes come out, the face paint is donned and people all around morph into someone or something else, all in the name of Halloween.

Sports stars are no different and this weekend some of the most decorated names took to social media to show the world their creative choices for the annual spooky celebration.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo lead the way by donning the full package of a wig, cape, fangs and fake blood while wishing his Instagram followers a 'Happy Halloween day.'

Genie Bouchard opted for a minimal approach to Halloween 2016 and dressed as Cat Woman

Meanwhile tennis icon Genie Bouchard took to Twitter to reveal the all black ensemble which made up her Catwoman outfit.

Bouchard, pictured pawing towards the camera, posted the image along with the caption, 'Really tanked the costume this year #meow.'

Thought it appeared the 2014 Wimbledon finalist wasn't too pleased with her own effort, her 882,000 followers felt differently with many replying to the tennis star to compliment her choice of character.

Bouchard wasn't the only tennis star to get in on the action, as British No 5 Laura Robson showed off her tiger stripes.

Laura Robson didn't hold back when it came to getting creative with face-paint

Donning face-paint, Robson took to Instagram to share a picture of herself fully made up as a tiger, writing 'Jumping on the Halloween post bandwagon. No such thing as too much face paint #gobigorgohome.'

Elsewhere, the world's most famous boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr was also eager to get involved in the antics.

'Money' Mayweather made sure to live up to his usual persona, posting an image of himself on Instagram along with the caption, 'If I'm going to be any superhero, I have to be the richest superhero.'

MMA star Rachael Cummins asked social media for inspiration for her 2016 costume ideas

Miesha Tate of UFC fame chose the video game theme and dressed as Super Mario characters

Mayweather revealed a picture of himself clad head to toe in a full Iron Man suit, standing beside two of his Bugatti super cars.

Remaining in the fighting world, MMA star Rachael Cummins asked the world of social media for inspiration as she tried to think up of a costume idea.

The California fighter posted a snap of her and a friend from a previous Halloween in which she decided to dress as an 'Army Girl.'

Not to be left out, UFC fighter Miesha Tate worked collaboratively with friends to explore the theme of video games and dress up as characters from Super Mario.

Over to Formula One and, despite being beaten to pole by Lewis Hamilton in the Mexico Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg still found time to pose for a snap with three women sporting painted skull faces.

The theme, quite aptly, fitting in with Mexico's 'Day of the Dead' festival - Dia de los Muertos.

Rosberg will now be hoping he can resurrect his previous strong form to seal victory in the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez and later go on to win his first F1 World Championship.

Footballers didn't shy away from the occasion either, as former Manchester United star and Euro 2016 winner Nani opted to share a picture of his visit to the 'Cabaret Maldito, Circo de los Horrores.'

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech was also finding entertainment with the spooky anniversary... but not through a costume of his own creation.

Cech replied to a user on Twitter who had sent the keeper a picture of himself dressed in the Czech's Arsenal attire, helmet and all.

User @CarsonAMerk asked Cech, 'How ya like my best goalkeeper in the EPL Halloween costume this year my man?' to which the Gunners' stopper simply replied, 'Brilliant.'

Cech's team-mate and fellow Arsenal goalkeeper also wasted no time getting stuck into the Halloween festivities.

The Colombia international took the opportunity to involve all the family and posed for a picture with his partner and their two young children.

The quartet opted for consistent theme of Superman and completed the scene with spiders, spiderwebs and Halloween balloons.
