Hamburg forward Wood sent off as Cologne wins in Bundesliga
BERLIN (AP) — Hamburger SV forward Bobby Wood was sent off Sunday in a 3-0 defeat at Cologne that left the side struggling at the bottom of the Bundesliga.
Hamburg paid an immediate price for the American's dismissal with Anthony Modeste grabbing the first of his three goals three minutes afterward.
Wood was sent off before the hour-mark for elbowing Cologne defender Dominique Heintz in the stomach after some shoving between the two while waiting for a free kick. Referee Benjamin Brand didn't see the incident but showed Wood the red card after consulting with his linesman.

Hamburg had been competing well up to then but Modeste made the visitors pay with a flick to Simon Zoller's cross inside the far post.
Modeste and Zoller missed further chances as Cologne dominated, before the French forward sealed the result late with a header to Marcell Risse's cross in the 82nd.
Modeste then completed his first Bundesliga hat trick by shooting through 'keeper Rene Adler's legs.
Modeste had missed a penalty before the break when his effort crashed back off the left post, while Wood had Hamburg's best chance early on, only for Cologne's Timo Horn to save.
Cologne moved fourth behind Hoffenheim, which earlier beat Hertha Berlin to overtake the visiting side. Second-placed Leipzig completes an unusual chasing pack behind Bayern Munich.

HOFFENHEIM 1, HERTHA BERLIN 0
Unbeaten Hoffenheim defeated high-flying Hertha 1-0 to go third and match its club record of five straight league wins.
Niklas Suele scored with a powerful header from Kerem Demirbay's free kick after a period of Hoffenheim pressure around the half-hour mark.
Lukas Rupp had been thwarted by Hertha goalkeeper Rune Jarstein with the first big chance before Pavel Kaderabek's header hit the crossbar.
The home side kept pushing as the visitors looked uncharacteristically out of their depth. Rupp again squandered a one-on-one with Jarstein before the goalkeeper was forced to intervene to clear from Andrej Kramaric.
Only Jarstein prevented Hertha from slumping to a heavier defeat with a series of saves in the second half from Sandro Wagner, Kramaric and then Kramaric again late when it seemed the Croatian had to score.
Hertha from dropped third to fifth after its second defeat.
