A 15,000sq-foot spa, a cigar room and an in-house cinema: The Austrian ski-in-ski-out five-star hotel that will appease even the most reluctant snow bunny

  • At Schlosshotel in Fiss, guests enjoy everything from mountain lunches and ski musicals to live bands
  • The five-star 270-room hotel has its own in-house ski-hire shop with a lift that takes you straight to the slope
  •  The family hotel in the Tyrol mountains has been owned and run by mother-and-daughter team for 25 years

There have always been limited perks for the reluctant skier on a winter break, but the new super-breed of chalet hotels make it almost as enjoyable to spend 24-7 inside as on the slopes.

One such place is the ski-in-ski-out, five-star Schlosshotel in Fiss, Austria, where guests can enjoy everything from lunch on the mountain and ski musicals to kiddie cinema and live bands.

I spent an incredible five days at the luxury family hotel in the Tyrol mountains recently, which is owned and run by mother-and-daughter team Bernadette and Simone Domenig.

Situated on the edge of Fiss village, right next to the slopes of the upmarket Sefaus-Fiss-Ladis ski resort, the five-star 270-room hotel comes with a 15,000sq-foot wellness area, children's cinema and in-house ski-hire shop with a lift that takes you straight onto the slope.

Unsurprisingly for a family-run hotel, the emphasis is very much on entertaining other families - they've managed to corner the market for parents who didn't stop wanting five-star luxury just because they had kids.

Alongside the ski school in the resort, there is also a kids' club in the hotel, an arts and crafts room, a children's cinema and a games room.

In the wellness area, meanwhile, kids have their own water park.

They are also specially catered for in the hotel restaurant, with a hot children's buffet and an ice cream station.

That's not to say that they have forgotten about the over-18's though.

The property is carefully designed with both adult-only and family spaces. For instance there's an over-18's wellness area with chocolate aromatherapy infusions, saunas, steam rooms and whirl pools - as well as a swim-in-swim-out pool that caters for all ages.

In the evenings, adults can relax in the bar while listening to live music or enjoy a smoke in the cigar room or shop for designer goods in the hotel store.

In the restaurant there are also two separate areas, with one hosting families and a quieter dining room accommodating adult groups.

As a fairly rubbish skier, food is of paramount importance to me as a reward for my efforts and the Schlosshotel doesn't disappoint.

Their breakfast buffet covers every option perfectly and no sooner have the eggs and bacon been cleared away, staff are onto lunch. This is a mouthwatering affair - a buffet in the lounge where guests can pop in from the slopes for traditional Austrian dishes in front of a roaring fire.

In the evening every dinner is a four-course-plus-cheeseboard extravaganza with dishes like crispy sea bass with pearl barley, octopus, aioli and crostini, and homemade Galetti in Calabria pesto with lemon salt and Parmesan.

The highlight of the evening meal for me, though, were the evenings when they laid on all-you-can-eat buffet courses of canapes or puddings.

Of course, if you're packing away this many calories, it's important to burn some off.

Thankfully, that's not too tough in Fiss, with 214km (132 miles) of ski slopes.

In the summer, the resort also offers everything from BMX parks to lake swimming, with plenty of treks for keen hikers.

This just scratches the surface of what they offer though.

In winter there are also night-time toboggan rides, a bobsleigh roller coaster and a ski musical featuring tricky ski and snowboard routines set to Broadway songs.

In short, if you're bored here, you'll be bored anywhere.

The hotel isn't cheap, with the lowest price for a bedroom coming in at around £270 a night off-peak in winter, but when you add up all of the perks like the free lunch and childcare, it's clear why some families come back every year.

I'm already planning my next trip, and I'm not even sure I'll bother hitting the slopes.
