Rose announced earlier in February that he was undergoing surgery on the February 9 and wouldn't return to CBS This Morning until March.

He wrote: 'I can't wait to be back completely rested with my heart recharged, my passion for the work ahead purposeful and my joy at life pleasures high. Until then, stay close.'

King took to CBS This Morning on Tuesday and said: 'He looks so great, and he was in such great spirits, and he's really, really happy.'

King said she arrived at Rose's apartment building on Monday morning, only for the doorman to tell her the journalist was already waiting for her at Cipriani.

King, who admitted to thinking Rose would still be bed-ridden and feeble, was surprised to see him in such good health.

She wrote on her Instagram: 'Ding ding ding! How good does @Charlierose look! What heart surgery? Met for breakfast @cipriani aka Charlie's kitchen...coinky-dink we both had on red....'

King posted another selfie she took of their breakfast date, and wrote: '@charlierose INSISTS on a selfie-NOT! Update he feels as good as he looks! 11 days after heart surgery. Nobody like him!!!'

In a letter posted on CBS' website earlier this month, Rose announced he was voluntarily undergoing a surgery to replace an artificial aortic valve that he had installed 15 years ago.

Rose previously had open heart surgery in 2006 after experiencing shortness of breath while in Syria to interview President Bashar Assad.

He was flown to Paris where doctors performed emergency mitral valve repair surgery.

Josh Elliott and Anthony Mason have been filling in for Rose on CBS This morning.
