It was the role that made him a household name and one of Hollywood's top stars.

And now Hugh Jackman, 48, has revealed just why his latest blockbuster film Logan will be his final outing in the Wolverine franchise.

Having dominated the US box office in its debut week, the Australian star revealed he believed the film's success was owed largely to the advice of two acting veterans from different eras, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Hugh admitted a discussion with comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld about going out on top - just as the funnyman did with his TV sitcom - led to his decision to make Logan his last Wolverine film.

And the father-of-two also told how the autobiography of English acting legend Sir John Gielgud provided some vital advice about getting everything from a role.

'(Gielgud) said how he played Hamlet 10 times in his life because he never felt he quite got it,' Hugh said.

'I haven't had quite 10 — I have done nine — but I was really determined, whether it was my best or not, to get everything out that I had ever felt I wanted to say about this character, what he represented.'

Whether or not his performance is judged to be his best ever, it is certainly set to be one of the most successful films in the franchise's history.

The results see it comfortably eclipse The Lego Batman Movie, which made AUD$69 million at its launch in early February.

Recently discussing the film, director James Mangold said Hugh agreed that if he would reprise his role, it should be the first R-rated outing in the X-Men franchise.

Reflecting on his time in the role, Hugh told how grateful he was for the movie that first put him on the map in Hollywood.

'It was my first movie in New York and it did give me many, many opportunities to play other things over the years that I may not have had,' he said.
