Meryl will play the Post's publisher Katherine 'Kay' Graham, who along with Benjamin Bradlee, played by Oscar winner Hanks, fought the federal government over their right to publish the leaked documents.

The Pentagon Papers was a classified U.S. Department of Defense history of the United States' political-military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967.

The papers were released by Daniel Ellsberg, who gave Bradlee portions of the document to publish.

When Assistant U.S. Attorney General William Rehnquist asked the Post to cease publication, Bradlee refused, leading Rehnquist to seek an injunction in U.S. district court.

The Post and the New York Times - who had originally broken the news of the classified document - appealed to the Supreme Court together on First Amendment grounds.

The spec script, written by Liz Hannah, was bought last fall by Pascal Pictures, and deals are currently being negotiated.

When the news was announced on Monday, Hannah took to Twitter to voice her excitement.

Retweeting a Washington Post tweet that revealed Hanks and Streep's involvement with her upcoming film, she added: 'This is, without exaggeration, a dream come true.'

Meanwhile, Streep is filming for the 2018 musical, Mary Poppins Returns, and Hanks can next be seen in The Circle, starring alongside Emma Watson, Bill Paxton, and Karen Gillan.

The sci-fi thriller hits theaters April 28.
