Not to be all cliché, but is there something in the water in Hollywood that's making every celebrity and her mother chop her hair into an edgy, blonde short 'do?

In the past week alone, we've seen both Katy Perry, 32, and Kristen Stewart, 26, debut dramatically different - and much shorter - styles. And at the end of last month, Scarlett Johansson, 32, showed off the versatility of her undercut on the Oscars red carpet and Vanity Fair after-party.

With so many celebs riding the short-hair train, styling experts expect to see an increase in client requests for similar cuts.

'Hair trends always go in waves and always mirror Hollywood,' said Tina Malhotra a stylist at L'Appartement Hair Boudoir in New York City.

'I think it's only natural that we will see more and more women lean toward a shorter pixie style, especially when they realize that it takes a fraction of the time to do and blow-dry as we enter the summer months.'

But Kristen and Katy's cuts aren't for everyone.  Here, the pros weigh in on who can pull them off and what you need to know before going under the scissors.

KRISTEN STEWART

Not long after she announced she was dating model Stella Maxwell, Kristen unveiled a platinum buzzcut by Bridget Brager at the premiere of her film Personal Shopper in L.A.

Kristen has always been a bit of a hair chameleon, switching between blonde and brunette hues at the rate Kylie Jenner swaps out wigs, but this is the shortest we've ever seen her go.

Stylist Debate: Should you cut hair short all at once or gradually?

'This look deserves a big reveal, so go for the big chop all at once!' -David Lopez

'How short how fast, that's up to you. Some women opt for more gradual approach, some like the thrill of a buzzing clipper. You have to decide what's right for you. But remember, you can always go shorter.' -Ryan Randall

'Just rip the Band-Aid off and do it! What's the point in breaking yourself into the idea? If you're going to do it, just go for it!' -Lauren Thompson

What the pros say: 'Kristen Stewart's buzzcut is in one word: bold!' Tina told us. 'This cut plays up her best features - her high cheekbones and flawless skin.'

Who can pull it off: 'The best face shapes for a buzzcut are angular or oval, but what's more important is the scalp shape and your face's bone structure,' said celebrity stylist Oscar Blandi. 'If your scalp has a nice rotation, a buzzcut will look really nice. You want to make sure you've felt the shape of your scalp before cutting your hair all off.'

Also, if you have 'super-feminine features (think almond-shaped eyes, a small nose, etc), this can really help to edge up your look,' explained celebrity stylist David Lopez.

Who should skip it: 'Hair this short is not for the faint of heart or for those with soft features,' said David. 'If your ears tend to stick out or you struggle with chin definition, I would stay away from this cut. If you don't have a strong hairline or if you have tons of baby hairs, I would also stay away.'

This look requires commitment, Tina added. 'It's not the kind of style that grows out in a week, so if you go for it, there's no turning back.'

Katy rocked her new undercut pixie, courtesy of hairstylist Chris McMillan, at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Sunday, less than a week after confirming her split from boyfriend Orlando Bloom.

The break-over had been on the singer's mind for some time, though. She told Elvis Duran on the red carpet that she has always wanted to have a pixie cut like Miley Cyrus [did].

Consider the Grow-out

'If you want to keep your short look you'll be at the hairdressers much more often, so be realistic about how often you like being in the salon,' advised David.

That said, growing it out won't be any less time-consuming.

Zoe Simone Cohen, a senior hairstylist at Salon Gregories in Newport Beach, California, always tells her clients that a cut like this is a big commitment. 'When you decide to chop it off, the growth will be uneven,' she said. 'It's a process that needs to be maintained as it grows.'

If you really can't wait to get your long hair back, though, 'hair extensions are always a fantastic option to help ease growing pains,' said David. (He recommends ones from Glam Seamless.)

'I feel like there’s a new wave, a new authentic vibe coming in and I think this matches. I want to redefine what it means to be feminine,' she told the radio host. 'Look at Scarlett Johansson, who's one of the most beautiful women in the world. We have the same haircut and I saw her at an Oscars party and was like, "I'm doing it." You're hot, you can be hot and look great with this kind of hair. Why not?'

What the pros say: I'm loving this deep side part on Katy Perry right now, it's both edgy and feminine by leaving her with some length to play with,' Tina said.

Who can pull it off: According to Lauren Thompson, a stylist at Nunzio Saviano Salon in New York City, 'Short cuts like these work best on anyone with an oval-shaped face. Katy's look can also work for anyone who has a round face because the height through the top helps elongate the face.'

The style is great for fine, straight hair, added David, but that doesn't mean women with other hair types can't do it. 'If you have super-short curly hair, just know that you'll have a more textured finish,' he said.

Who should skip it: 'Short hair, especially if you're going short from long, needs to be done with intention,' said Ryan Randall, whose clients include fellow short-hair lady Kelly Osbourne. 'It's all about attitude and owning the power of your look. If you're on the fence or not sure if you'll be able to manage it, you're not ready.'
