Shocking aerial footage has captured a 'crazy' driver risking his life by racing over a submerged crossing. 

The motorist crossed the spit of land from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to the Northumberland mainland.

He made the half-mile trip one hour after the last advertised safe crossing time as the tide raced in.

Luckily he made it to the other side but made quite a splash in the process.

Local coastguards warned others not to attempt such a feat, saying if the engine breaks then an expensive and dangerous rescue would have to be mounted. 

Coastguard Ryan Douglas told Chronicle Live: 'This did shock us — there has been so much safety advice put out over the last few years and yet people still do this.

'This was an extremely dangerous thing to do. It's not like the water comes out of nowhere — that vehicle was lucky the engine didn't cut out.'

'The consequences can be quite serious. We urge members of the public not to drive on coastal causeways when the tide is coming in. If you do get in to difficulties, call 999 for the coastguard.'
