But DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) will begin to uncover a web of deceit surrounding the rape case as they countinue to make the rounds of the area in order to unearth who at the party could be culpable.

In a teaser trailer for the latest instalment, Miller ominously admits to Hardy that 'it's a scarily wide network out there' with regard to the number of suspects they are faced with.

Desperate to expose Trish Winterman's (Julie Hesmondhalgh) rapist, it seems that cab driver Clive Lucas (Sebastian Armesto) and shopkeeper Ed Burnett (Lenny Henry) head up the list of possible guilty parties.

In a scene from inside the police station, Hardy is seen asking Clive: 'Why would you lie about what you were doing?'

Teasing that there is more to Clive's alibi than was thought, another clip shows Ed getting a mouth swab DNA test.

Trish's assault took place at her friend Cath Atwood's (Sarah Parish) birthday party, at a remote country house.

But can Cath be trusted? Both she and her husband Jim (Mark Bazeley) are not free of suspicion.

The plot also looks to develop between newly estranged couple Mark Latimer (Andrew Buchan) and wife Beth, as scenes show them having a tense discussion.

And Ed is seen with Cath outside his shop, looking tense as they address Trish's attack.

Elsewhere, Trish's ex husband Ian (Charlie Higson) pays Jim a visit at his garage, and then approaches Trish herself, who ended the last episode by receiving an ominous text from an unknown number.

Ian refused to provide DNA in last week's episode, clearly also having something to hide.

Broadchurch continues on Monday night at 9PM on ITV.
